now on with the show This is Toycast and this
is the special BotCon 2011. We are about 48 hours
removed from the final day of BotCon. It rained
June 2nd to the 5th, and I am with Optobotamus.
Hello, sir. Good evening to you. Afternoon, whatever.
Yes. So, you went to BotCon this weekend. I did.
I did, and for those of you that are astute at
noticing such things, I think I left my voice
at BotCon, and it has yet to catch up with me.
So doing this, Mr. Mike, is a strain on my vocal
processors. Hey, I asked you on Twitter earlier
if your voice had recovered. You said, yeah,
kinda. So it's not my fault. There's the kinda
is there All right, so Paul is here to fill in
the yearly I like doing the yearly BotCon wrap
up with one person that is that has been to the
current year of BotCon Because I this is the
second time I've done this the first time I did
it was last year with Michael Wilson Because
what I had him do was I had him go over just
briefly like I don't know, two or three minutes
per toy. I had him go over every single exclusive
from last year's set. So this year we've got
several different topics and Paul's gonna basically
fill us in on several things. This is your first
BotCon, is it not? This is my first BotCon and
if this one is any indication of how other ones
have gone... or will go, I can guarantee you
that I will be going to future Bot Cons. Okay,
Stone Cold. Sorry. I literally just got done
watching before I got done talking. I literally
just got done watching a review for an upcoming
Stone Cold Steve Austin. It's not my fault. All
right, so this being your first BotCon, what
are your impressions overall of first the convention
and then just the social interaction that you
had this year? The convention aspect of things,
while it was amazing and incredible to go to,
it really in my mind took a sidekick approach
to the social aspect of it. The social aspect
was the best. The actual convention itself, I
mean, it was put, I mean, obviously put on by
Hasbro and the people over at the Transformer
Collector Club, and they did a wonderful job,
an outstanding job, and I can't speak highly
enough about how well they did. The panels that
they put out there were entertaining. Thanks
in no part to the people that were participating
in the panels But it was it was it was kind of
a surreal type of thing I I was driving there
and obviously I didn't have as long to drive
As some other people I might I might have been
one of a very small group of people that Just
live outside the area of Pasadena, California.
Whereas someone like P off had to fly all the
way from Virginia to come out here, you know,
and you know, many other people flow. I mean,
Cobra Commander TFW might have been one of the
furthest people to come because he flew all the
way from the UK to come out here for BotCon.
Yep. So the level of anticipation, I mean, I
didn't have, you know, during the journey to
BotCon. I didn't have that long of a journey.
So my anticipation, I guess, didn't really build
too much. I would imagine as Ben's flying from
Virginia over here, you know what I mean? There's
more time for that to build, I guess. So when
I got there, it was kind of like, oh yeah, I'm
kind of here. All right. Now what? The first
day, I mean, there were kind of lulls. Saturday
was the best day to do anything. I got there
on Thursday and the only thing to do really on
Thursday was line up and pick up your package,
your Primus package. Friday kind of was eh. They
opened the dealer room on Friday, and you could
finally get in and see some of the stuff, but
that aspect was kind of... I don't particularly
care for the dealer room. That was kind of hard.
That's because they didn't have any Fort Max's
there. They did. They actually did, but they
had four or five of them. The best looking one
without, I mean, when you deal with Fort Max,
one of the biggest things that you have to pay
attention to is the yellowing of the white plastic
on him. That's one of the biggest drawbacks.
That's something that you can, I mean, you could
buy an incomplete Fort Max and you can piece
it out and you can eventually get a complete
one. There's nothing you can do about yellowing
on any kind of transformer figure or figures
in general. Once they're yellowed from sunlight
or smoking or anything of that nature, they're
ruined. And the best one that I saw there had
no yellowing, but it was going for $1 ,800. And
I basically told them that they can, you know,
go someplace. That's nuts. Yeah, $1 ,800, which
is that that's I mean, Fort Max's is a premier
centerpiece in any collection. But the most,
in my personal opinion, and a lot of people,
the most expensive and sought after collectible
in terms of Transformers would probably have
to be Grand Maps, which is the most rare form
of the Maximus figures, I suppose, that are out
there. That guy will fetch about $1 ,800. Fort
Max is, I mean, $1800 is about $800 more than
average price for him. So that was ridiculous.
The dealer room here was really, really overpriced.
You're walking around seeing Revenge of the Fall,
or not, like Reveal the Shield and generation
figures that are two and three times their actual
value. And it was just really bad. That was a
very negative aspect. I didn't care for the dealer
room at all. If I ever get a chance to go to
BotCon, I will probably most likely avoid the
dealer room because I'm sorry. The dealer room
at BotCon should not be friggin eBay. Damn it.
That's really what it is. I mean, and it's not
even, I wouldn't even say it's eBay because it's,
well, no it is. It's eBay if every single price
was a buy it now. You know in overcharging for
everything I did actually find there were three
figures That I put on on a list of um if I see
good prices for I will buy One was a fort max
the other one was a G1 Scorponok Which I saw
a bunch of those, but I didn't even bother Price
checking any of them because once I saw that
fort max. I was like fuck So I didn't even I
mean because Scorponok is another one that can
fetch several hundred dollars The other one the
other figure that I wanted was a g1 six shot,
and I found one mint mint condition no yellowing
complete fantastic looking figure the only problem
that I Found out about afterwards the stickers
didn't come applied they came on a sticker sheet
still Which was nice, but Because of the age
of the sticker sheet the stickers aren't sticky
There are two or three of them that like half
the sticker has no Tacky or you know stickiness
to it So I had to go to repro labels and I had
to order another set which cost me an extra $16
so a figure that I actually got for 90 bucks
now ends up costing me realistically a hundred
and six dollars which Puts it about the price
range. I thought I was getting a good deal because
$90 was about $10 $15 cheaper than anything I
was seeing on eBay and Now that I had to buy
the stickers for it, and they're not even the
original stickers They're just stickers, but
regardless it now puts it up to the the average
price for eBay so I was a little bit disappointed
but I really wanted a six shot. I don't even
know if you knew, but I was going on and on about
trying to find a six shot for a couple weeks.
Yeah, I saw. But initial impressions of the convention
itself, the convention itself was wonderful.
The dealer room kind of sucked. And what about
the other aspect, the actual social aspect of
being there and meeting up with like Pia and
all them people? That aspect, I've heard people
that have gone to BotCon and TFCon in the past
sit there and say, I just dropped my mouse, sit
there and say that TFCon is a little bit better
of a convention because it's more of a social
event. I had a blast socially interacting with
everybody at BotCon. That made this trip. And
that's why, without a shadow of a doubt, no matter
where BotCon is next year, I am going to go.
Just because of the social aspect of things.
I mean... Hanging out, obviously, with guys that
I'm locally friends with. In terms of names,
I mean, there's Venom711 on YouTube who goes
by Mexibotamus on Twitter. I mean, all these
other people, I mean, all these guys that I've
become friends with locally. Just wonderful to
hang out with them. But then, like you said,
P .O .W. Getting to meet him was outstanding.
I got to meet the Niblett, which she's absolutely
adorable. Yeah, Niblett's amazing. Niblett is
wonderful. I got to meet Ben's wife, and she's
lovely. Obviously, I got to meet Sean Long. I
gave Sean actually a couple. Sean got a couple
hugs out of me. It was very interesting to finally
meet him. Jazz Santi, Rimfire, John 3 .0, who
else was, who else? Like I mentioned, Cobra Commander
TFW was there, that was an honor to meet him.
Nicole Hailstorm, Nicole was there. Vangelis
was there, I didn't get to speak to Vangelis
too much, I never, everybody kept pointing them
out to me after he would already turn a corner.
Gone, I'm like you guys gotta you know it's like
when you're hanging out with a bunch of guys
And I and someone says did you see that hot chick
that just walked past and then when you look
she's already gone It's like you need to tell
them before they're gone So but I oh my god comparing
Vangelis to a hot chick. Oh, there you go Vangelis
Vangelis is a hot chick um but I I did finally
get to meet him off Friday night So that was
cool. I got my picture taken with him. That was
nice. I met Proto Man and he's a wonderful guy.
And some of these people I had preconceived notions
about and I feel really bad because I really
shouldn't have because they're all absolutely
cool in person. The one thing that I find ridiculously
hilarious is that both me and Proto Man for the
Hall of Fame We apparently have a different meaning
of what business casual is than anybody else
in the country, because he and I both showed
up wearing full -on suits and stuff. I didn't
wear my tie, but we were wearing, you know, button
-up, you know, dress shirts, pants, dress shoes,
you know, suit jacket. We showed up there while
everybody else just shows up in like a pair of
just regular black pants. if you're lucky they
were wearing a button -up shirt or a polo shirt
you know and it was funny because as soon as
I walked into the Hall of Fame hall he spotted
me and he points at me he's like and he said
I don't remember what he said he's like we obviously
had the same idea you know and you know he gestures
to his outfit and I'm looking at him like yeah
we're the best looking ones here and I mean it
was it was really cool to meet Daniel really
cool guy I'm trying to think, there were so many
other people that were there. I met Ryan who
owns Cybertron .com and he and I talked and he
was a great guy. Just the social aspect. expected
things just wonderful and like I said my my voice
is gone still from Friday night we there was
the TFW 2005 meetup at the the bar and I Had
a I had a great time My wallet did not like me
too much. I think I ended up I think I ran up
a bar tab of almost or a little over $400. Oh
my god buying people drinks and Just having a
great time It's the I can't even describe all
the fun that was had in that in those few hours
we were sitting there and I would I bought everybody
a drink and I was sitting there and obviously
I was a little bit drunk by this point and We're
sitting there. I mean, you know, there's All
my local LA friends, you know, Ben was there
Couple other people were hanging around and I
bought everybody drinks and I was sitting there
and I was just doing a little bit of a toast
and I just I was like you know all you guys you're
awesome I love all you guys wonderful hanging
out with you and then there was just some there
was some random guy that was there and he was
he was like the TFW guy and I just looked over
him like I don't even know you but I love you
too and everybody was just it was just so much
fun the social aspect Just far and away blew
everything else out of the water at BotCon. Yeah,
you know, the last four years, two of them out
of the four, last year and this year, it seems
like starting last year, it's like, oh my god,
the social explosion at BotCon. Because as you
said earlier, everybody's like, oh, well, BotCon
is mass market. We just go there for the panels.
We don't go there for the social interaction,
blah, blah, blah, blah. Whereas TFCon, it's more
social. You know, last year and this year, I've
noticed, maybe it's just because of the explosion
of Facebook and Twitter, I've noticed a lot more
socializing from everybody the last two years
at BotCon, everybody that I know that is gone.
So, you know, maybe there's a turnaround here.
Here's an indicator. If you look, and I just
noticed this, if you look at the pictures that
people are taking, Predominantly far and away
predominantly. They're pictures of People just
hanging out and having fun. Yeah, they're not
pictures of panels or You know, I mean obviously
I mean there are some of those, you know, but
I mean I look I look at my phone I have Maybe
say five pictures of Peter Cullen when he did
the script reading compared that to 20 pictures.
Yeah, when I was just hanging out with my friends,
you know, you know and to me that's a good indicator
that people are going there to hang out with
the people and Everything else. It's just a bonus
Yeah, yeah. So speaking of the panels, what panels
did you actually attend? I attended now it was
tough to attend them all Some of them seem kind
of lame I mean I didn't want it like I didn't
go to the collector club Panel when they revealed
the I guess I should have because I was kind
of curious about it But they revealed next year's
figures and they showed pictures of them things
that that nature I didn't go to that I went to
the the Hasbro Hasbro toy panel which showcases
toys that haven't really come out yet and Things
that they're working on in the future I went
to the Transformers Prime script reading, which
was out of this world. That was amazing. And
I went to... And I forgot the name of it again.
They actually called it something different.
It basically was a Hasbro toy panel that was
mostly... It was just two people. I'm trying
to think. It was Aaron Archer and... Someone
else. Eric Siebenhauer. Say that again? Eric
Siebenhauer. He was there, but he came later
on. And Eric actually, I actually kind of felt
bad because they announced that Eric is leaving
the Transformers brand. Oh, that sucks. Yeah,
that kind of sucks. He's going on to work for
Play -Doh, which is like, oh, that's an interesting
direction. It's a really strange direction. It's
kind of like something from, and this is the
outer limits. Yeah, it was one of those, you
know, we kind of felt bad. We're like, no, well,
you're not getting fired, but we're moving you
to Play -Doh. Like, son of a gun. But basically,
they talk about things that they're going to
be working on in the future, things that they
want to try to do. A lot of it was comic book
related. not too much not too much toy related
or anything of that nature but it was more from
what I saw from the coverage that the report
that TFW 2005 had put out it was more so about
the overall continuities between everything and
it was more so letting us know about what is
it called exiles the Exodus sequels yeah I don't
know it's called something it's not it's not
Transformers Exodus 2 it's like Transformers
exile or something the new yeah, yeah, so it
was kind of letting us know as far as like how
they plan to Go about doing the fiction even
though they wanted to be one universe obviously
within each universe it has to make sense for
say war for Cybertron 2 or exiles or Future seasons
of Transformers prime right right one thing I
want to point out from the coverage that I saw
people really need to go back and look this up
because Everybody needs to calm down everybody
needs to stop bitching and moaning about transformers
prime bumblebee not being able to talk because
they have a story plotted out of telling how
he wasn't able to write or how that became and
then possibly they said that They may give him
his voice back But what's weird to me is they
said that the reason why they did that for the
cartoon is because they want to be faithful to
the movies Are you kidding me? Well, it's...
They didn't actually... Who said that they wanted
to be faithful to the movie? The TFW people?
It was in the panel coverage. It was on one of
the TFW things. It was one of the notes. It basically
said something along the lines of, with Bumblebee,
they want to pay attention to all the different
continuities, but with his voice thing, they
want to... You know fall in line with the movies
because so basically if he doesn't have his voice
in dark of the moon He's probably not gonna have
his voice in transformers prime season 2 I can
I can tell you that the dark of the moon version
of bumblebee Here's a little bit of a spoiler
so people don't want to listen a spoiler skip
ahead a couple seconds Bumblebee will have his
voice again in in the dark of the moon Not extensively.
His vocalizers are still damaged and it requires
a lot of effort on his part to say anything.
And the way it's described is that it's just
easier for Bumblebee to use the radio to say
things. Because it's not as much of a stress
on his vocalizers. But there are a few times
where he does say things that need to be said.
I'll say that. That's cool. I don't remember
them saying anything about how they're connecting
the two continuities. I'll have to find the paragraph
and I'll send it to you. I believe you. I mean
it's just I don't remember them saying that and
they might have announced that during the Transformers
Prime panel. Well, yeah, I mean that's probably
where it came from because it was basically talking
about Transformers Prime Bumblebee, so that probably
came from the Prime panel. It's very possible,
and when you have Orsi and Kurtzman doing it,
it makes sense that they're going to take some
elements from the movie, bring it into the Prime
series. But yeah, I did hear that there are plans
to address that in future episodes. Yeah The
script reading tell us a little bit about that.
How is that? Like what was that like to attend?
How like how did that all happen? Did they just?
Which did you go to the Stunna con job or did
you go to the transformers prime cast script
reading? I went to the prime cast Script reading
I didn't go to the stunt job one because I didn't
they didn't say who was gonna be reading For
the for the stunt job one. So I kind of skipped
that I was like, I I mean, I don't know who's
gonna be there It doesn't really matter to me
Okay, and it was and they were just reading the
comic book. Yeah the comic that came with the
the set the set itself The the prime reading
they had all the voice actors except for and
and I have both names They didn't have the girl
that did RC They didn't have They didn't have
Frank Welker obviously, I want to say they didn't
have There was someone else that they didn't
have Um Does bumblebee actually have a voice
actor? I don't think so. I don't think so either.
Um, oh Oh, um, oh Shit Ernie Hudson actually
did him uh... well i mean bernie ernie hudson
was there and ernie hudson filled in for the
guy uh... okay and i can't remember exactly who
it was so so wait a second ernie hudson was there
and you didn't get a chance to corner winston
zedmore afterwards he didn't die he wasn't that
he'd be he wasn't available for autographs i
don't think uh... what i did like about i mean
So here we are, first we go in, we're all sitting
down, and we're not allowed to take pictures
while they're in there, which is stupid. I mean,
they let you take pictures when they're introduced,
but when they sit down and they do the reading,
you're not allowed to take any pictures or anything.
So we're all in there, and as soon as they come
in, obviously, everybody just explodes. They
stand up, they start clapping. One thing that
I do have to say, and people have said it a million
times, but I've never witnessed it, is that Peter
Cullen really does kind of sit back and have
this amazement about him that people are so honored
to be in his presence. He's so humble about it.
It's ridiculous to witness it because he sits
there and he almost gets like embarrassed and
it's kind of cute. This little old guy... gets
up there and everybody's clapping and he sits
there and he puts his hands on his chest and
he's just very humble about it. But everyone
in the cast recognizes him as who he is and they
all show him the proper respect that he rightfully
deserves. Yeah, back in the days where they actually
let people videotape the panels, Optimus Scourge,
Gary, he's got a video of Peter at Bot Con 04
and that first part, the very first part of the
video when he walks in, it's almost like when
the people are clapping and he's like bowing
to them and everything else, it almost looks
like he like ... Misses breathe like he stops
breathing for like two or three seconds Yeah
as he is so humbled with all the fandom and everybody
loving him for what he's done over the past 25
30 years Right, you know people just I mean every
say and and and this was the case any time that
Peter Cullen was around I mean jumping forward
we'll talk about this a little bit, but at the
Hall of Fame event He literally got up to change
seats He was sitting in one section and then
he got up to go down into the VIP section to
sit down because they're like, no, you have to
sit down there. He literally got up, started
walking down the aisle, and everybody just stood
up and started clapping. He wasn't doing anything.
He was just walking around. People just started
clapping. But you know, I mean, you got phenomenal
voice actors. I mean, Jeffrey Combs, who has
always been a huge fan, I've always been a huge
fan of him, going all the way back to Star Trek
Deep Space Nine. I love Jeffrey Combs. Ernie
Hudson, who, it was hilarious how several times,
and Jeffrey Combs kind of, they did the script
reading for a recent episode, the one with Skyquake
that turned into a zombie. Shadow of the Zone.
Yes. they did the script reading for that with
you know a few minor tweaks and they're like
you know they were talking about how the um the
the the land or the the space bridges or whatever
you know they like kind of crossed um and had
some kind of weird thing and they kept talking
about you know them crossing the streams which
was an obvious you know joke towards uh the ghostbusters
thing you know and uh every as soon as you know
he just Jeff just kept you know throwing that
out there everybody was just laughing and you
know you could see Ernie over there kind of getting
a little bit embarrassed. He played off of it
because there's a scene later on where Ernie
who's playing agent Fowler calls Jack's mom looking
for Jack. The lady is like well no who is this?
He's like oh nobody um we're just the Ghostbusters.
You know then acts like he hangs up you know
because he didn't want them to know that you
know, Agent Fowler, you know, he didn't, Agent
Fowler, yeah, he was the cover. You know, so,
I mean, he's like, oh, no, you know, there's,
there's just something strange going on. You
know, there, you know, I mean, you know, something
strange in the neighborhood and, you know, that's
it. And it was, it's just funny how they played
off of it. And it was just really well done.
One thing I will say though, is They all up there
and again, I'm really bad with names and P all
is gonna get mad at me because he loves this
guy the guy who plays Jack Oh Josh Keaton Josh
Keaton. Thank you. He also does the voice, you
know for I'm spider -man and Peter Parker and
you know, the in spectacular spider -man Yeah,
correct. And you know, I mean he does a fantastic
job he he's a huge fan just himself, you know,
it was funny because Somebody had asked him a
question. They said, you know, I mean, are you
going to go around to the, you know, the, the,
the dealer room and are you going to be looking
for anything to buy? And he's like, you know
what? I grew up with transformers when I was
a kid and I always wanted to do one Optimus Prime.
And he's like, I never had one. And they're like,
well, maybe you could, you know, you can get
one and have Peter sign it. And Peter's like,
yeah, I would. He's like, I would absolutely
do that. A few minutes later, someone from the
dealer room came running in with the G1 Optimus
Prime and gave it to him. And then, sure as shit,
he went over there and had Peter Cullen sign
it for him. All the actors, it's so amazing.
There was a thing on there where another girl
came up and asked, and I forgot, again, I forgot
the guy's name. I'm so bad with names, it's terrible.
The fellow who plays on bulkhead Kevin Michael
Richardson Kevin Michael motherfucking Richardson
this dude gets up there or so this girl comes
up there and she's from England and she wants
him to do this like I don't know some kind of
promo that took place over in the UK and nobody
else understood it except for him and this girl
and she was carrying with her, you know, those
beer helmets where you put a, like a, with little
cans of beer on the side that you drink in. Instead
of beer, it was Sunkissed Orange Soda. Oh my
God. And asked if he could put it on and read
a line from whatever this thing was. And he's
like, yeah, sure, I'll do that. So she runs up
there. She's all excited. You know what I mean?
And obviously Kevin Mike, I mean, he's just a
cool dude. Yeah, he is. She goes up there, hands
it to him, he puts it on, and he says the line.
But before that, everybody, all the panel members,
they rip out their cell phones, and they're sitting
there recording him doing this. I know. Like,
this is the funniest thing. You know, it's just,
all these guys up there, they're all fans. They
love it. Yeah. One other final quick thought
is the chick who plays Miko is as annoying in
person as she is on the show. Oh, come on. I
love her to death. But she gets up there and
unlike everybody else who just reads the lines
kind of and goes along with it, she gets up there
and she's very hurt. She's got the body language
going. She's acting it out as if it was really
happening. She looks like Miko. She really does.
If you were to take Miko and give her a real
life form, her voice actress would be that real
life form. It was absolutely amazing. Absolutely
amazing. That's funny. All right. So we're going
to take a quick break and we're going to come
back with Paul's thoughts on all of the BotCon
exclusives. We'll be back after this. What's
that Let's find out Okay reflector, let's see
what you can see We are back and it is time to
talk about some plastic crack The way we're gonna
do this is we're gonna start with Paul is gonna
tell us about the five -figure box sets give
his opinions on each character Each figure alt
mode and robot mode really quick and then we're
gonna go through the other 10 11 However many
other exclusives there are Alright, so in the
box set we have drag strip dead end motor master
wild rider and breakdown which is the stunta
cons because this year's was this year set was
transformers animated the stunta con jobs so
when you first got the box set you first were
able to just kinda likes like after you got home
after the convention like is obviously during
the convention you don't have time to really
you know think it out. When you first got all
the stuff home, what was your, when you opened
the box again, what was like, just, I don't know,
start from the top, start with Dead End. What
was your opinions on Dead End, alt mode and robot
mode? Well, first, you say that we didn't have
time. Well, okay, the reason why, because every
time you used Screamer, every time you were on
video, you were talking with Maximus or you were
talking, you know what I mean? There wasn't really
time for you by yourself to just sit down and
look at the toys. I mean, well, yes and no. There
were, the first thing, well first, as soon as
I got my set, you... You go in there, now my
pick up time was 9 o 'clock that night. So I
find, I did not, well that's when I was allowed
to line up, I should say. It started at 6, and
subsequently each, each, you know, like our new
lines would be allowed to form. I didn't get
mine until, I didn't actually physically get
my set until about 11 .30, so. I was hanging
in line. There were still people lined up waiting
to get theirs. I got lucky because you line up
to get your badge in your, you know, whatever,
you're in one line and then once you get into
the room where the badge and the box sets are,
then there are now multiple lines based on the,
you know, like A through C is in this line, D
through E is in this line, and it goes down through
the alphabet. you're all in one huge line and
then you funnel into another line because my
last name was R for some reason that line was
going ridiculously fast so I was actually only
in the line for like I said about an hour and
a half not too well I mean the original line
the original line I was there for about an hour
Then once I got to the alphabet line I was only
in there for about an hour and a half So it wasn't
too bad, but a lot of people were waiting You
know two and three hours once they got in there
to be separated by their last name Once I got
my set then you're allowed to go to the club
store You have to have your press or you have
to have your badge to be able to go into the
club store to buy the exclusive figures Which
is another line so while I'm in the line for
that I was able to open up my box set and take
a look at it. My very first initial impression
was, holy fuck, I forgot how to transform these
things. I picked up Dragstrip, first of all,
which is a repaint of the animated RC figure,
and I'm like, and everybody was making fun of
me, even people in the line who knew who I was.
They were making fun of me because I... couldn't
figure out how to, I couldn't remember how to
transform her. And I'm like, guys, I haven't
transformed this figure in like two years. Give
me a break. You know, I mean, like cut me some
slack, you know, but eventually I got through
them. Subsequently through the rest of the time,
there were, this set actually had a lot of QC
problems, sloppy paint jobs. I think God dog
from TFW. He had one of his autotroopers actually
didn't even have a head so Huh, I said, oh, yeah,
so I mean there were some QC problems. Um, the
the worst ones were um via the Galvatron figure
and I think toxitron those were the ones that
had the worst QC in terms of like, you know sloppy
paint, you know chips Parts not, you know staying
on very well things of that nature. I mean, I
I was very lucky I only had one problem with
my box set and that was um, and I forgot the
guy's name though the one who is um I think it's
is it Wild Rider the one that yeah lockdown repaint.
Yeah wild The the cannon on his hood The one
of the cannons wouldn't stay in You know like
if you fold them back one would constantly keep
popping out so that kind of sucked But my initial
first impression was that they were absolutely
gorgeous looking I Mean you wanted to start with
dead end then yeah, yeah Dead end it is car mode.
I've always liked the car mode the mold itself.
I think is a very solid solid look Obviously,
I think the colors work very well for him. Robot
mode, I think he looks really cool. I love his
little mustache. It's just, I mean, here's his
little like goatee thing that he's got going
on. It's a terrific looking figure. I mean, all
of them look better in person than they did in
pictures. A lot of people were hard on the motor
master, his head. In person, it looks a million
times better. Yeah, it does. I mean, it's a much
better looking figure in hand. And the colors,
I think, are fantastic on it. The whole box set
is really nice. One thing about it, it comes
with a little pin, a BotCon pin, which I don't
think I knew that it came with that. So as soon
as I opened it, I'm like, oh, that's neat. I
really like that little touch. The set's wonderful
looking. It's an absolute wonderful looking set.
The box I thought was really pretty too. Yeah
and the box is awesome. Very nice. It's one of
those ones where I almost wish I bought the loose
set of the figures so that I could keep my box
set, keep them in the box, display the box, and
then have a loose set to display around the box.
You know and I mean I probably could get a loose
set. I I know that there are some people um I
I actually think my friend Panzer Jedi has a
loose set that I was originally gonna buy from
him But then he's trying to sell it to Kal -El
Prime That falls through I might I might buy
the loose set from them just to have it cuz I'm
kind I'm kind of a Regretting not picking it
up while I was at the convention Alright, so
moving on to Breakdown, which is a repaint of
Rodimus' mold. I personally, in pictures and
even seeing the pictures that people have taken,
I still don't like those colors on the Rodimus
mold. I just don't. Those are just two weird
colors for me. But what do you think of Breakdown?
The color the colors are actually I mean they're
accurate to how breakdown was yeah, I Don't I
I don't know who they could have done a better
job using For breakdown then the the actual Rodimus
mold So it doesn't bug me that much I think I
think it looks good. I like the new head on them.
I think it's really nice if If I were to if I
were to because this the Rodimus mold was used
twice in this year's set You have breakdown and
then you have the exclusive Side swipe side swipe
figure. I kind of like side swipe a little bit
more But only but only barely Yeah, but but I
do I do like the I do like the overall look And
then in robot mode, you know breakdown I Think
he comes together a little bit better In terms
of his walk, yeah, it's it's it's okay What about
drag strip Well, like I said drag strip was the
first one that I opened out of out of the box
or and try transforming them and I did I Eventually
figure out how to transform that sucker I think
she looks great. I know a lot of people were
kind of complaining. I mean, I'm still not a
big fan of the big giant spoiler thing, but that
goes all the way back to RC. But it's, I mean,
it's a little bit too big and a little bit too
gaudy. But again, it's a smaller kind of thin
looking car, which I think nicely depicts how
the drag strip looked in G1 being that it was
like a Formula One race car. I think it's a nice
use of it. I think most people are past the whole
conspiracy about Dragstrip being a female now.
I didn't hear that joke at all at BotCon. I think
it's kind of over and done by this point in time.
But I wouldn't have minded if they did use one
of the heads, like one of the new heads or whatever,
if they could have put one of the new heads on
Dragstrip. To to change it from a female to a
male. I Don't think that would have worked though
with the body The way that that body is that
wouldn't work. Well only only because it's got
robo boobs Yeah, and it's got a robo aft as well
Interestingly enough they talked about um, you
talked about the uh, well, well, we'll talk about
this later. I Don't want to jump ahead What about
Wild Rider? Wild Rider, you know, I like the
way it looks. I'm not a big fan of them using
the lockdown mold on it. What else could they
have used? I don't know. I'm just saying, I mean,
I just don't think it fits too well. Don't know
it's I mean it's a good -looking figure, but
it reminds me more of the the the psycho blitzwing
personality You know especially with the face
the face looks okay, but I mean it looks too
much like bits blitz wings Yeah a little bit
well that that kind of turns me off And last
but not least, the leader, the motor master.
What do you think of motor master? I think people
need to stop bitching that he wasn't ret guard.
I think he looks fantastic as this Optimus Prime.
The head on there works. It looks even better
in person. And I don't even really think pictures
do it justice. Hopefully my video review will
do it better justice There you go All right,
let's talk about Physitron and the auto troopers
that were repaints of him What do you think of
Physitron? Um, I like the way he looks. I think
I love the new head on it. I like the colors
They're a little bit, I think I used the term,
a little bit garish in their look. But it works.
It looks really nice. It's a... Now I don't follow
any of the comic book continuities. So I don't
know too much about this. But everybody is saying
that it's a direct... I mean his name is Physitron.
But it is Iron Fist. from the Last Stand of the
Wreckers comic, which that's what everybody's
saying and I'm gonna have to just go along with
it because I don't know at all about it, but
his bio supports that apparently. And I think
it also is supported that his name is Iron Fist
in the BotCon comic. Yeah, which is weird because
it's in the comic, they call him that, but then
the figure is Physitron, so it doesn't... Don't
know maybe it's copyrights who knows iron fist
um they couldn't call them iron fist because
apparently there's a Marvel character Yeah named
iron fist. I that's one of the things that I
heard so I think it looks wonderful. I I will
say that I think the autotroopers look better
I Really like the head obviously still on there,
and I just think the colors look better the black
pinstriping, the white plastic, the blue highlights
with the windshield. I just, as I was going through
editing my video, I mean, I honestly do say that
the Auto Trooper is my favorite figure out of
all the figures from BotCon this year. It's my
absolute favorite. I just think the paint on
it is wonderful. I mean, and it's not cheap.
It's not a cheap looking white like, If you look
at like the reveal the shield jazz which has
a very kind of I mean, that's a very white figure
the white on the autotrooper is just Immaculate
in my in my opinion. It's it's bright. It's vibrant.
It's just a gorgeous gorgeous coloring and that
I I Really do think it's my favorite figure out
of all the figures this year Awesome Let's move
on to what could probably be the bad exclusives,
Galvatron and Action Master Thundercracker. Yeah,
they're probably the weakest, and it was weird
because they were also the most expensive. That
two pack, I think it was $92 for the two of them,
and while Galvatron has grown on me, I really
do like the way Galvatron looks that Galvatron
will take its place on my classics shell as Galvatron
and Yeah, it's probably the best Galvatron. We've
ever gotten out of the classics universe Generations
thing right absolutely. I mean okay. Yeah, he
turns into a helicopter which and whatever you
can complain about that and But the coloring
on him just looks really, really nice. Yeah.
Really nice. Thundercracker, on the other hand,
instantly when I... Well, number one, he's action
master, action master base, and he's G2. Yeah,
he's action master G2 shattered glass Thundercracker,
and oh my... Which basically means you have to
invert the colors and then invert those colors
and then invert those colors. And what you end
up with is what really does look like a knock
-off transformer. It absolutely, without a shadow
of a doubt, looks like a knock -off transformer
and I'm very disappointed in that. Yeah, it looks
like the worst tie -dye job in history. It's
kind of like if you could imagine what rainbow
bright diarrhea look like That's the coloring
that went into the action mask a thundercracker
Oh my god, I mean it's really bad, but you know
what's weird is that's also one of the figures
that was selling out In terms of eBay and stuff
and selling the highest and quickest mean I had
I when I first got mine on Saturday I I mean
I bought I actually bought a couple after the
fact to sell them because they were selling for
so much um they my very first auction for it
sold out in about 45 minutes from listing it
and it sold for $150 so it's Wow, that's that's
nuts It's a seeker. I know it's a seeker That's
that's all it is. But the most expensive set
was probably probably the weakest in my opinion
and Let's move on to the what I think is actually
the best exclusive said that they've done over
the last couple of years Toxitron and Sideswipe.
Toxitron is a repaint of the Optimus Prime Voyager
mold and Sideswipe is a repaint of Rotomus. Correct.
And one thing that I absolutely love is the bio.
The bio for Toxitron is wonderful. He's described
as being the first attempt at using an Autobot
shell for the Decepticons. And it's like, you
know, when they tell stories about people that
are cloning things and things of that nature,
when you clone things too much, the later you
go, the more convoluted it is, a little bit more
screwed up. it ends up getting. And that's how
they describe Toxitron. So their first attempt,
he's a very convoluted figure to the point where
he will constantly just drive around backwards.
He's like Mater. He just drives around backwards.
They said he's got a severely stunted intellect.
that what they learned from him allowed them
to go on and create the Nemesis Prime and Motor
Master. So he's the first attempt at cloning
and didn't go too well. Now, I love the way he
looks. He's outstanding looking. The only problem
that I have is his neck coloring. Like this bright
neon color and then the rest of his body is a
different color. I wish that they would have
picked one and stuck with it. You mean like on
his shoulders where his head is? On his neck.
oh okay um yeah that's always been a problem
with the Voyager Optimus mold from animated I
noticed that with the actual original Voyager
Optimus where like his arm would be the red that
is always is but like on his neck and like his
shoulders like where the the truck cab opens
up to get his head out It's a different it's
almost like a faded red on the original and I
think that's the same thing that they did there
It's just it's so weird. Yeah, so I wasn't too
big of a fan of that But I love the way he looks
too. I think and his light piping He's got this
awesome red light piping which is just super
creepy and very cool Sideswipe, I love how I
mean he's based off of the g2 sideswipe and looks
fantastic. I love how the storyline has him,
he's the perfect companion for Cheetor, who's
coming out later on from the Transformer Collector
Club, and they're police officers basically.
And the thing that's really kinda cool is the
side swipe in this set, they say he's very by
the book. He's learned a lot from his reckless
years when he was younger. And I like how it's
basically sideswipe, but an older version of
him. Older and wiser, it seems. Gorgeous looking
figures. Both of those are really nice. And I
really think that the sideswipe one, using the
mold, or Rodimus, is just a hair better. I would
so agree. Like, if I had a choice between Breakdown
and Side Swipe to actually own, I would go with
Side Swipe. Yeah. No, I would agree with that.
I would agree with that. But nice looking set,
though. I do like that set. That's actually,
I mean, I'm keeping one of my auto troopers.
Because I'm not an army builder, so I'm getting
rid of two of them. One of them is actually going
to Callie from the Puggle Formers. I'm trying
to get her to make Puggles of my cats. Yeah,
I saw that conversation. Yeah, so we'll see how
that goes. And I'm only keeping the Galvatron
from the Galvatron and Thundercracker set. But
I'm keeping both Toxitron and Sideswipe. I like
both of those. Yeah, they're very, very awesome.
So that's the the exclusives we are going to
take another break You're gonna hear some ads

Animation Podcast. Decepticons, transform and
rise up! Alright, we are back, and the final
thing that we're going to talk about is the Hall
of Fame ceremony. What was it like this year?
It was actually kind of nice. It was in a, and
I can't remember, it was in the Pasadena Convention
Center Hall or something like that, where they
actually... It was explained that that was the
very first place that Michael Jackson ever did
the moonwalk. Emmys have been, you know, like
the awards show have taken place there. It's
like a 90 year old building. So, I mean, there's
this great history when you go into this building.
It was funny because it was described as being
a business casual setting which to me maybe it's
because I come from a corporate background. Business
casual means for me a suit but without the tie.
That's how I envision it. Most people go there
wearing polo shirts. Some people were wearing,
you know, I mean they were basically wearing
like collar shirts that were kind of tucked in
but weren't really fancy or anything like that.
So it was kind of weird. I know Proto Man and
I, we spotted each other and both of us were
wearing suits. We kind of laughed at each other
and we both agreed that we were probably the
best looking ones there. It was a really nice
thing. It was $45 which was kind of... Kind of
a gripe for a lot of people because when you
got in there they handed you a goodie bag that
had a bottle of water in it a small little bag
of stale popcorn What else was in there? And
people got like I got a bag of M &Ms. I think
people got other kinds of candy But that was
really kind of it and people were like okay $45
for this And really was, you know, kind of a
negative point there. And then we get in there,
we're sitting down, we're waiting. Oh, and you
also got to wear the real D, either you could
choose between Optimus Prime or Bumble Bee, the
3D glasses. Oh yeah. They gave you those as well.
You get in there, you sit down, they started
about a half hour late. It was supposed to start
at like eight o 'clock, and then it started for
like 8 .30 or something. All the executives were
there the the the president of Hasbro was there
the Aaron Archer who's like the vice president
of Transformers brand blah blah blah blah. He's
got a big long title He was there. He was doing
a lot of the introductions and things of that
nature and they they introduced They started
off with the the inductees for the the robots
Which was really cool Let's see what else then
Then they had a little thing for Steven Spielberg.
Who was the human inductee? He wasn't there at
the event, but he had a video obviously for us,
you know, thanking us and everything Then they
introduced Michael Bay Michael Bay came up Give
a little gave a little spiel about how before
he got involved with Transformers. He hated Transformers.
He never really liked them Then we got to see
a Basically, it was a 15 minute. Well, no we
got to see the first five minutes of the movie
And then another like 10 11 minutes basically
was just a trailer With stuff that we hadn't
seen yet Just kind of like clips, you know sporadically,
you know from the movie taken sporadically from
the movie, but it was basically like a trailer
It was shown in 3D. We watched it. Almost everybody
there that I spoke to agreed that what we saw
looked fantastic and amazing. The 3D on it was
probably the best 3D that we had seen on any
3D movie yet. I mean, it was... They showcased
a lot of scenes like the whole swirl suit where
the humans are flying through. That was all shot
in 3D and that all looked spectacular. Absolutely
spectacular. After the clip we got the final
Inductee which was fan selected. And they were
really kind of, they had fun with it. With the
whole erector thing. I'm so glad that bullshit
is over. I agree Luckily a waspinator was who
won out of the out of the fan selection and And
they you know they they jokingly went along with
it. You know they they did a whole video spoof
You know talking about you know a mock -up history
of him and things of that nature But subsequently
later on the next day Aaron Archer was in a panel
and the you know, like the futures panel or whatever
you want to call it and People asked the bottom
and he's like, you know, we had fun doing it,
but we really want the Hall of Fame to be something
serious and If you the fans make a joke out of
it, it will make this into a joke Yeah, and he's
right. I mean, it's it's nice. It's kind of like
my my pet peeve of people running one joke into
like constantly telling the same joke over and
over and over again. He's right. I mean, you
know, I heard, I think I heard this from Frodo
Man a while ago. Frodo Man said they tried to
do a Hall of Fame a number of years ago before
this one that's currently happening now. And
it didn't really take, or people turned it into
it. Yeah. If you turn something into a joke,
then... The company's not gonna put money into
it if it's just gonna be a joke to everybody.
And they really want to do something like this.
I mean, this is a brand that's going on almost
30 years that's been around. And they want to
put some legitimacy to this and really give it
a sense of honor to be inducted into this Hall
of Fame. And when you make a farce out of it,
you know, by, you know, let's have a rector.
That was absolutely... ridiculous and and when
they would announce it there'd be people it was
funny because half the theater would be booing
at it and half its theater would was cheering
for it and i'm like this is the stupid there
are people walking around with banners you know
trying to show support for it you know and they
said you know we had fun doing this but let's
not do this again please so i was glad that was
over with and um In all in all, you know, I mean
it was it was a nice thing to go to People did
complain because last year, you know, you got
a dinner this one you didn't When you did leave
they gave you another bag of goodies that have
like some posters in there You know small little
I don't even know if they're you know, maybe
they're like 10 by 11 posters or something like
that But they're not they're you know, nothing
too big But it was it was it was nice to go to
not worth $45. So my only thought is maybe they
had to pay Michael Bay's appearance fee. You
know what really occurs to me though, if they're
going to do this every year, why not work that
price into a Primus? Not to make the packages
cost even more than they already do, but If you
buy a Primus package, you're going for the full
experience of the convention. Why not find a
way to work in the Hall of Fame dinner as or
ceremony dinner, whatever. You people know what
I mean, right? Why don't they work that into
the package? Well, no, no, I can see where I'm
failing here is because you have the people that
are general admission. Well general admit general
admission. I think they could have went to the
Hall of Fame thing, too That's well, right, but
that's what I'm saying. That's why they have
the X instead of Including it in a package price
and not selling separate. That's why they sell
the set the Hall of Fame stuff separately is
so I I would I would say the best way to do it
in You know include you know or I'm building
on your idea is if you want to buy the Primus
package Get a little bit of a discount on the
Hall of Fame like instead of $45 Maybe not only
is $35 if you get the whole thing. Yeah, so that
protoform packages and Mini -com packages and
general mission people can add that up Yeah,
then or on they want but it's more effective
to get the primus because it'll be a little bit
cheaper. Yep You know, so I mean all in all it
was nice But without a doubt, it was not worth
$45 this time around. But it was fun. Yeah, you
guys had a lot of fun. Yeah, a little bit too
much fun. You're paying for it. I told my fiance,
and she's like, OK, well, that was your bachelor
party then. That ain't fair. You don't get married
until November. You can't have me having my bachelor
party now. That ain't right. All in all, it was
a very good time. It was amazing to see so many
people from so many different places internationally,
people that I've known. I think Proto Man actually
mentioned this as well, that it was finally nice
to put some faces to the names that we've known
so long. It seemed like a lot of new people really
went to this. And I really hope that it still
keeps on growing, even after the movies. I'm
just wondering what they could do next year for
a set. That's, that's my only thing because they
did say in one of the panels that they are. I
think the, I don't know if it was the TCC panel
or if it was the Hasbro toy panel. They said
they're done with animated. They're not doing
anymore. Animated exclusives for BotCon. So I'm
just wondering what the hell could they do now?
They said that if Brian from BotCon or from the
Transformer Collector Club that they can come
up with something and Bring it to them and it
works with the existing molds that they have
they will do it Yeah, they will do it, but they
got to come up with something obviously. Um next
year what I can tell you what was said Was um
because next year will be the 25th anniversary
release of the movie the transformers animated
movie from 1986 I thought that was this year
well Yeah, yes, and no I mean it's like kind
of in between because it came out like now so
anyhow but What what they said was what are the
odds? of getting Rekgar as a troop builder for
a future BotCon exclusive. And they said the
answer was above average. Which to me kind of
hints towards them possibly trying to work that
into more than likely next year set. That's my
guess. My mouth is... That could be very interesting.
This is putting some stress on my mouth and throat.
You know, and they still haven't announced, they
still have not announced where 2012 BotCon is
going to be. I like that because I know they
had that drawing for people to win trips to next
year. Right. I like them not announcing because
last year when they announced it at the dinner,
as soon as the hotels went on pre -order, they
were filled for this year. I don't think they
should announce it the year before where the
next one's going to be because that's not going
to give people enough you know enough of a chance
to even try to get to go if the especially like
someone like like say it's I don't know say it's
in New York or say it's in Florida again say
it's out there on the on the on the west coast
or something you know it's not going to give
people like me a chance to even try to book anything
because if it's already filled well you know
that makes no sense I like how they they they
give the people that attended the event the opportunity
to uh Booked a little bit of in advance as as
a you know a nod a thank you to coming and if
you want to go to next year Here's a little bit
of a you know a bone that we're throwing you
Well, yeah, that's fine for people who attended
the event and that's great. But no, I I know
I know there and announce it and then Put wherever
it's gonna be have the hotel put the crap up
and then things sells out, right? No, I understand
but I will say Most places, wherever you go,
there are hotels around that you could stay at.
While I stayed at the Sheraton, which is where
the actual convention was, Pia stayed at a Hilton
that was like two blocks down. There was a Pasadena,
it was called the Pasadena Inn or something like
that, where I think Nicole and Andy stayed at.
I mean, there are plenty of hotels that are around
the surrounding areas for wherever it is that
you could be able to get a room. I mean, anybody
who wants to be able to go missing out on it
because there aren't any hotel rooms is probably
lowest on the on the list of true. Well, it's
true. But I do understand what you're saying.
You know, I mean, I I'm happy that I stayed at
the actual hotel or the convention was because
it I was able to park my car and it was parked.
Kind of annoying because I could have paid like
nine dollars a day as opposed to thirteen dollars
a day because I paid thirteen dollars a day for
a pass that lets me go in and out as much as
I want. The nine dollar a day pass was just nine
dollars a day, but you couldn't leave the parking
structure at all. As soon as you left, you were
done. Oh, I could have just parked my car for
nine dollars a day since I didn't take my car
anywhere. You know, but I mean, that would have
saved, you know, 16 bucks off of my total bill,
but you know, whatever So oh no, you had a really
great time and you're gonna go next year. I Without
without a doubt. I want I want to go next year.
I'm gonna do everything in my power to go next
year and This really was and and I think a friend
of mine mentioned that this is the most fun that
I've had Since I was in high school And that's
really that's really the truth All right. Thank
