About this Episode

OptimusSolo and TFG1Mike return from hiatus to discuss three episodes: the Sorceress is captured by a power-hungry man in the desert, an old admirer pursues Teela relentlessly, and interdimensional visitors bring a dangerous artifact to Eternia. The hosts also reflect on the show's history, streaming availability changes, and Lou Scheimer's passing.

and the Masters of the Universe! I am Adam, Prince

of Eternia and defender of the secrets of Castle

Grayskull. This is Cringer, my fearless friend.

Fabulous secret powers were revealed to me the

day I held aloft my magic sword and said, By

the power of Grayskull! Hello, this is Optimus

Solo and welcome to the seventeenth chapter.

in Tales of Eternia. With me for this journey

into the Masters of the Universe franchise, as

always, is none other than TFG1 Mike himself.

Hello, sir. Hello. Your tongue twisted in time.

We haven't had this podcast going for a while

now, but we're back. A lot of stuff has happened

since we put the show on hiatus. A very great,

the creator. Filmation. Lou Scheimer passed away

last year. May he rest in peace. I never got

the chance to meet Lou or anything like that,

but I did see the special features where he was

talking about fan conventions on the original...

God, I'm flashing on the stupid company's name.

No, it's the company that put the DVDs out. Yeah,

BCI, there you go, thank you. Yeah, on the original

BCI DVDs, there was a feature where Lou talked

about conventions and the fans and all that stuff,

so it was kind of sad to hear that he had passed

away. Also, another reason why the show has been

on hiatus for this long, oh boy. Since the hiatus,

we've had to switch from Netflix to Hulu in order

to watch the episodes because Netflix got a bug

up their butt and said, hey, we're not gonna

have He -Man on Netflix anymore because we need

to make room for better stuff like Breaking Bad.

Nobody cares. And because I've moved like four

times since the hiatus, my DVDs are still in

a box somewhere, so... I was going back and forth

on if I was going to buy the updated version,

etc, etc, but I want to just have the original

ones, but I think I only have half of them. The

original BCI releases, no offense to Mill Creek,

but the original BCI ones are the best. Yeah,

that's the ones I want. I only have half of them,

I believe. So for me, watching, because as we

all know Netflix doesn't do commercials, they

just do it like a DVD break, like a black screen

break. Uh, Hulu, however, on the non -pay version

of Hulu, the free version, has like little 30

second ads, so it's kind of interesting to see

where Hulu puts the ads to break up the cartoon.

Some of them are more than 30 seconds, some of

them are like 90 seconds. It's annoying. Well,

I mean, if you really want to be annoyed even

more, watch them on... They used to be on Cubo,

or RetroTV, or one of them channels. He -Man

and She Were Both are still on TV and syndication

now. And I saw that and I was like, what? But

the quality is so bad, I don't know... Like the

DVD quality is really good, the Netflix quality

was really good, even the Hulu quality is impressive,

but the TV quality that those networks have to

air them now, every time I see the Battle Cat

part of the transformation scene, I cringe. And

I don't mean that as a pun at all, because it's

just bad on television. I don't know why. long

last ready for the powers of grayskull yes yes

I am all right well in this episode of tales

of Eternia we will be giving you our thoughts

on episode 49 temple of the Sun episode 50 yes

50 wizard of stone mountain and episode 51 tree

elves return so we hope you're ready because

it's finally time to go back to Eternia but have

a proper throne Is that not so, my feathered

friend? Sarsurus, can you hear me? Prince Adam,

I hear you. I am weak and very far away, and

I am chained. Where are you? What happened? I

was flying over the sands of time when I felt

the presence of magic below. I tried to investigate

when I... I was knocked out of the sky. Are you

hurt? Just weak. Sorceress? Sorceress, come back!

Come back! Temple of the Sun? I lost her. We

start today with episode 49, Temple of the Sun.

It was aired on Thursday, November 10th, 1983.

The writer was Jeffrey O 'Hare. The only episode

that we've had of his before this was Eye of

the Beholder. And the plot goes a little something

like this. A poor man named Neptune limps across

the sands of time in search of the Temple of

the Sun. Inside, he claims the Scarab of Power,

a magical jewel. The Scarab's power transforms

Neptune into a muscular, dominating being. Neptune

uses the Scarab to capture a Falcon flying over

the sands of time, which happens to be Zor. The

Sorceress contacts Prince Adam through telepathy,

revealing her location, the hero's journey to

the Sands of Time, and must not only rescue the

Sorceress, but also overcome the many obstacles

that Neptune unleashes upon them. We have our

general main Masters of the Universe involved

in this one. We don't have any of the evil warriors.

So before we get to the PSA, what are your thoughts

on the plot of the Temple of the Sun and the

whole Neptune in the Sands of Time? Okay, you

have... Skeletor, Evelyn, Beastman, Merman, Clawful,

Trapj... You have all these evil warriors that

you could use. And they have in the past used

evil warriors that go off on their own and have

plots without Skeletor. We've seen that before.

Why in the world do we need a Villain of the

Week episode? Seriously? And it isn't even villain

of the week because back then it was villain

of the day because these were running four or

five days a week. So it's like, oh god, give

me a break already. The beginning of the plot,

I assume you wrote this out yourself. I don't

think you copied this from anywhere unless I'm

incorrect there. My secrets cannot be revealed.

I'm assuming you wrote it out yourself, but it

is never really explained that he is looking

for the Temple of the Sun, except when he says,

ah, at last, I've found it. The first we see

of him is a dying old man walking in the desert

looking for a glass of water because he is so

thirsty because he's walking in a friggin' desert.

And then all of a sudden, he has great joy that

he's come across the Temple of the Sun by accident.

Oh, God. Meet this plot. I don't have a problem

with the plots as much as I have a problem with

some of the stuff that happens over the course

of the plot You know fine. We got this old guy

limping across the desert searching for magical

jewel of course we had magical artifacts And

what every other episode so that's not a surprise

You know that he transforms into this being and

that you know I kind of has to figure out if

we can Basically save him from himself and let

him learn the errors of his way. I mean that's

all classic storytelling etc My problem comes

more in with the execution of how they did things

I mean I could have dealt with that plot if it

would have been a perfectly done episode But

when it's not and then you have a halfway decent

plot that's done wrong it kind of but we'll get

into more of that in a little bit. As far as

the PSA, it's all about being a leader and not

following leaders blindly, which I guess had

somewhat something to do with the episode. You

know, I guess that's a good lesson. Don't just

be sheep and whatnot. I don't know, how do you

feel about the PSA? Well, he, he want, he man

says he wanted to be a leader and he just, instead

of being a good leader, he... And what did he

really lead? He led pieces of sand. I mean, it

wasn't even a real friggin' army. Yeah. You know,

pieces of sand and a giant scorpion. Or whatever

the hell that scorpion lobster looking thing

was. You know, I understand if the PSA is meant

to teach children and adults about being leaders,

but using... Nep who as an example Not a good

choice. Well, yeah, he wasn't really they didn't

know a hundred percent fit because he was never

a leader He was just a singular guy Who got powers

and then did things on his own? So he was never

leading a group of people and he was never following

nobody was ever following anybody blindly So

yeah, the PSA is a good message, but it had really

little to do with this episode So Anyways, we're

gonna try to turn things positive we're gonna

try to say some good things that find some good

things we can say about this episode and For

the first time in a long time. We're gonna make

the trek over to the castle grayskull Do you

know where she is the sands of time a place called

the temple of the Sun? We've got to rescue her

We? Count me out. I hate sand. It gets in my

eyes, in my claws. Sometimes you get it in your

mouth. I hate that. Sorry, you big furball, but

this is something beyond our mere mortal powers.

Besides, there's nothing to it. By the power

of Grayskull! I know you don't enjoy this, old

cat, but there is a quest for us. I know, but

every time I turn into that bad old cat, you

get me into some kind of trouble. I'll make a

deal with you. I'll go with you, but as cringer.

Maybe I can bring some common sense to this quest.

Alright, my feline friend. When you change your

mind, be sure to let me know. Fat chance. Alright

so we have arrived at Castle Grayskull and unlike

Neptune we have plenty of water so we have no

fear of that. As far as our highlights or our

Castle Grayskull moments, I'll go first because

it's not going to take me very long. I did have

written down here that I like that it was somewhat

of a decent simple story. My problem was not

with the plot. I'm fine with the old man trying

to get power dealing with it. losing his power

etc that's fine um that is not part of the problem

with this episode and as far as a moment that

maybe i liked the best on the episode um i believe

it's the first time we've ever had cringer make

a deal with he man with prince adam slash he

man to stay as cringer um and that he goes along

with the episode Being Cringer, I thought that

was an interesting twist to that whole character.

Yeah, it is. The only other time we've seen him

in a dangerous situation as Cringer was the time

where he or someone nightly was killed or trapped

him in that glass box and he had to save him

and right jump that way that was the only other

time that he was in a situation but this is the

first time we've ever seen him actively say oh

no i don't want to be battle cats it's the first

time he's actually so he always tries to avoid

being turned into battle cat this is the first

time that he successfully convinced it He -Man

to turn him into battle. And then obviously there's

some consequences from that action as we go throughout

the episode and I just thought that was a great

part of the episode. What were your moments that

you had at Castleberry Skull? It has nothing

to do with the story. It has nothing to do with

the one -off character of Nephthu. It has everything

to do with Cringer and Adam and He -Man. That's

all my notes are is Cringer, Adam, He -Man. Cringer,

we sand in every crevice ever. And then Adam's

like, sorry a big furball. I just, I love their

friendship and the way that their relationship

is between Adam and Cringer. It's just really,

really well done. Who wouldn't want a Cringer?

Exactly. You already mentioned Cringer wants

to go on a quest. The whirlwind. That was funny.

Granger got caught in the whirlwind. That was

funny. Oh, yeah. And he knows, deep down he knows.

He is no cat. He is no battle cat. And he's like,

I'm going to hate myself for this. Yeah. And

then science lessons, yay, sand into glass. Oh,

we'll talk about that in a minute. Yeah. But

that was what I had. All right. So those are

the good things about. Temple of the Sun. I'm

sure that discussion will be a little bit lengthier

as we make our way for the first time again in

a long time, down to the treacherous Snake Mountain.

Something is missing, my fair falcon. I know

what it is. If I am to be lord over Eternia,

I should have an army! An army to conquer the

world! So, we find ourselves... in Snake Mountain,

and even though it has been a while since we've

talked about He -Man, one thing apparently has

not changed over that time span, and that is

that Zor, slash the Sorceress, is the weakest

magical being in this whole franchise. Once again,

Zor the Weak shows up, and it drives me insane.

Just once just one time. I want her to be just

like nope my power stronger BAM. You're done

never happens It's always somebody overpowering

her Well Okay, I I understand your point, and

I understand why you dislike it, but this isn't

one of those times where She's traveling with

the Masters. She's off by herself Looking into

something because she thinks she can handle it

And she's flying as the Falcon, she's flying

as Xhor, so it isn't one of the things where

it just makes me really, really mad like it has

in the past where it's like, hey, she's the sorceress

outside of Grayskull, at least they kept the

fact that she had to stay being the Falcon. But

yeah, I can kind of see it, it just, I don't

know. There was also an editing blunder. There's

a wind scene where He -Man enters the scene twice.

Oh really? Yeah. I must have missed that. So

I just noticed that. That was kind of a weird

thing where he seems like he enters the scene

twice. If they were trying to do something else

I don't know what that would have been. I'm sorry,

what did He -Man just do with that tornado? He

moves it off into space. No, hold on. Since when

can we physically grab on to a tornado? It's...

We defy the laws of physics and science and common

sense because he man just literally Manhandles

a tornado That's not the first time he's thrown

stuff into outer space. You know his staff in

the outer space Yes, that's true Going with your

science lesson there. He even gives us an explanation

of how he's making this glass But are you freaking

serious? Nobody could recreate that Nobody could

do what he just did with the sand and the sun

and everything and make glass. And then not only

did he make a little, you know, it's almost like

when you're out in the wilderness and you see

people like trying to start a fire and they're

rubbing sticks or doing this, that and the other.

And usually you just get, you know, a little

spark or just a tiny fire. Okay. So we're using

basically the same concept to make this glass,

but he doesn't just make a tiny bit of glass.

He's making the whole huge window panes, sheets

of glass. Yes, even as a kid. I I hope that I

was scratching my head at that point and being

like, I'm sorry what Well, I and hopefully I

didn't go outside and try to do the same thing

When I said silence lesson, yeah, it was more

so the fact of his explanation I like that he

gave the explanation and actually explained it

because maybe physically that is at least possible

and like the tornado holding It was more so like

the size of glass that he made and just how quickly

it was done and it just did not like that part

And then an interesting thing because they find

themselves Inside that one place. There's no

doors on it So they're trying to find a way out

I believe my memory serves me correctly. No,

they're trying to find a way in and he man just

makes a door Yeah, but my question is how did

the bad guy get in there to begin with? The skylight

Arms drops the ropes down. It was just like there

was no door so they couldn't get in but there's

somebody in there So how'd they get in? Like

they designed a place with no doors, but somehow

I was inside it I don't know. That was just a

little weird odd moment for me that I was like,

hmm You know, it's fine that they set up this

dilemma that there's no doors How do we get in

but then you got to explain how the other person

got in there? What about you snake mountain moments?

Well, first of all, I gotta go back to Castle

Grayskull for a second because I do want to mention

something I believe it was this episode because

this is the episode with Kringer. Did you notice

the unstocked animation of the transformation?

When Kringer says, I know I'm gonna hate myself

for this, and He -Man's like, okay, here we go.

By the power of Grayskull, when he says that

and he's holding the sword like he always holds

the sword in two hands, It's not the castle behind

him, it's the regular background. It'll be a

picture in the post because I grabbed it, but

that was interesting how they did that instead

of having the standard transition or the standard

transformation scene with the blinding white

light behind him. They just had the regular background

and they basically infused him with the energy.

I mentioned it earlier. the guy wants water that's

all we know he's he's been walking in this desert

for days upon days or whatever else then all

of a sudden he's overjoyed at he's found this

template it doesn't there's no narration nothing

there's every narration in this series other

than the psa but there's no narration saying

what he's looking for what he's doing in the

desert know nothing and all of a sudden boom

he's happy he's He can make it to the temples

to get this jewel. Are you kidding me? If you've

been traveling in the days in the desert without

water, you're not going to be able to crawl into

a damn temple to get this powerful jewel. Oh,

God, that's just shitty writing right there.

It really, really is. And his name is the worst.

character name I've ever heard so far in this

series. Nepthu. I assume it's supposed to be

something like Cthulhu, but I wrote down Nephu.

N -E -P -W -H -O. Because I don't think this

guy ever comes back. And they set the plot, they

set the end of the plot up so well that he doesn't

really have to come back because the sorceress,

after the thing was destroyed, she remade it

and he's now the gardener. And the whole time

that I'm thinking about this, the whole time

I'm watching this, recently I've been watching

a lot of investigation discovery channel and

I watched a show on there called Behind Mansion

Walls where it chronicles rich people and sometimes

poor people becoming rich and vice versa, etc,

etc. And the whole time I'm watching this episode

I'm like, why does this feel like an episode

of Behind Mansion Walls? Because it's just like,

he was poor, he had nothing, and now he has all

this power and he decides to use it for evil!

If it wasn't for the Cringer moments and the

Adam and the He -Man moments with Cringer, this

episode would get a straight zero for me. I know

we're not to ratings yet, but I'm just saying

that right now. This episode would get a straight

zero if it wasn't for those moments. We will

see exactly what we do rate this as we move into

our award and ranking system section of the show.

I think you just imagined you heard a call for

help. Now can we go home? Attack track, shouldn't

we be coming across this temple soon? I have

is only superficial. It is not a lot to go on

for locating the temple It's been a long time

since we handed out any award so we're giving

out power swords and Havoc staffs for those that

remember and I will start here I do have an award

to give out and That is a power sword and I'm

gonna give it to Cringer for standing up to He

-Man for once I Agree same here the only hardware

I'm giving out in this episode and it's well

deserved to Cringer Any other ones besides that

one? I'm gonna give two Havoc staffs. So the

writer, sloppy, really sloppy writing. And to

nep through himself. I know you said it's classic

storytelling, but I'm sorry. Does every story

as soon as some weak and poor character have

to go the evil route really? Yeah, they do do

that a lot they do pick on these like helpless

people and just making the wrong choices It just

pisses me off. All right, sir. So you said you

weren't given a zero So what rating do you give

this episode? And like I said Cringer saves the

day but the rest of it kind of sucks so it gets

a one out of five orcos That is harsh harsh way

to start back up with this thing Alright, I'm

not too far off from that. I'm actually going

to give it two and a half Battle Cats right in

the middle. I think I had potential. It could

have been better, but there was just some things

with the glass and the tornado and just a lack

of execution. Like you said, the cringer in Prince

Adam slash human aspect was the best part of

the episode, but most of the other parts of the

episode fell flat. So I'll stick it right in

the middle at two and a half. Alright. Alright,

well let's see what our milestone episode 50

has in store for us. The power of love. Another

day wasted in this lonely tower me Malik the

mighty wizard of stone mountain held prisoner

by the memory of the one I love Beautiful Tila

We have reached a milestone episode episode 50

of the he -man the Masters of the universe series

and that episode is wizard of stone mountain

Air date was Friday. It's how we ended our week

back on November 11th 1983 and The writer was

a combination of Janice Diamond and Paul Dini

which we've seen a Variety from both of these

individuals So I'm not going to go ahead and

list them all as far as the plot Malik the lonely

wizard of stone mountain has fallen there was

in love with Tila over the years. Wishing her

to love him as well, Malak makes a deal with

the evil Locus. Locus begins to cause destruction

in Malak's name, and Malak is powerless to stop

him. He man and the heroes arrive to stop Malak,

but the wizard captures Tila and forces her to

spend time in his company. As the pair argues,

Locus reveals to Malak that the deal he initially

made has a far deeper price. Once again, evil

warriors are absent from this plot whatsoever.

We do have an additional master that shows up

besides the regulars, and that would be Ramman.

Ram -Man really could be a regular. He is regular,

but he's not in every episode, so I like to mention

when he does show up. Yeah. But yeah, he is one

of the regulars that's just not as frequent as,

say, Madden Arms or Orko, etc. I couldn't help

but think of, with this plot, and Malek and Locus

making a deal of the Little Mermaid, and Ursula

and Ariel making a deal. I was thinking more

of The Devil's Advocate. Oh, okay. Yeah, that's

probably more apropos. But yeah, it's interesting

because we do get to see some things that maybe

I've been requesting. in a way, which we'll get

to when we get to Castle Greyskull. As far as

the plot goes though, we basically have someone

from Tila's past who had a thing for her, kind

of like a scorn to love her there because she

didn't reciprocate the feelings. So because he

wants that back, he makes a deal, deal turns

bad, involves Locus, and then kind of a weird

thing because it's also involving the evil spirit.

but at first you think it's just a deal with

locusts i missed the whole evil spirit part but

that character comes into effect later because

it is two separate characters voiced by two separate

people um yeah and you know obviously the whole

plot is basically about trying to force something

that you want even though other people don't

want it and the consequences that has when you

try to force that upon someone So what did you

feel about the plot? I know you're not one probably

for the love stories I know this is a milestone

episode 50 that you probably could expect more

from but if you take all that away What do you

just feel about the plot in general? I'd rather

watch attack of the clones before this again

attack of the clones That's right, even though

the love story in that sucks all the hell this

is worse Well, it's not really a love story so

to speak in this one because it's just yeah,

I know I know it's not but it's it's just It's

unrequited love the whole time that mr. Wizard

there What's his name? Mr. Wizard there, what's

his name? He felt like To me, he felt like Anakin

from episode three. I can see some connections

there. Like the end of it, when he was like,

you bitch hate me! Blah, blah, blah. Um, I don't

know, the plot, everyone knows by now we're 17

episodes into the show. Everybody knows that

I loathe Tila. At least in this continuity. Um...

And... I just... I don't know. This episode was

really, really unneeded and they could have put

this anywhere. For a 50th episode, I would have

expected something a hell of a lot better. And

this is, I think this is more Janis Diamond than

it is Paul Dini, because not a lot of storytelling

as far as I can tell is Dini style. Yeah, it's

hard to say. But yeah Mike is obviously not a

big fan. We're probably gonna agree to disagree

on this one as far as the PSA goes It's sooner

or later. You have to answer for your actions.

Basically is the gist of it as to what I got

What did you get from the PSA? Same thing. It's

just your average Lesson of the day. Yeah, you

know any neat These things, when Shimer and company

created them, they were because they wanted to,

I don't know if it's because they wanted to or

because the network said, hey, in order for you

to have an action cartoon, you have to do this.

And that's kind of what it was back then, I think.

So he wanted them to be lessons that us as kids

could really learn something from on a daily,

five day a week daily basis. But it's an alright

lesson. It's not like any of the lessons we've

had over in Mast Mayhem, thank God. True. Now.

Alright, well, that means it's time to talk some

good things about the Wizard of Stone Mountain,

so let's make our way to Castle Greavesville.

This is it, Orko. I've had it with your silly

parlor tricks. Sorry, Duncan. I must have gotten

my spells crossed. You've got your spells crossed.

Why you... Wait a second, I can fix everything.

Hey, what's going on? What's going on? I've got

a blizzard in my workshop. That's what's going

on. Alright, time for our Castle of Grey Skull

moments for episode 50, Wizard of Stone Mountain.

First off, I did appreciate that it was a unique

story. It's not something that we've had repeated.

I can't think of any other episode that was quite

like this. So at least it's something fresh and

unique and a different type of story, whether

you like it or not. And I can't... Fault the

episode first this next part because it's been

something that I've been begging for for a long

time And I'm always trying to get more information

on Backstory for any character. So yeah, this

isn't maybe what I had vision as far as the type

of backstory information I wanted but we did

get some slight backstory for Tila Some stuff

that she was doing before we knew her, you know

in this role and you know what was going on while

she was Doing that and getting courted by this

guy at center. So we do get some slight backstory.

So I appreciate that And then I got to say I

love the Ramman moment When he walks off with

Tila and he says hey when you got it you got

it. I Thought that was funny coming from Ramman

as as the unexpected person that Tila walked

off with That moment kind of has it's good and

bad because it also really unrealistic and it's

not something that is serious. It's just a joke.

So as long as you take it, it's just a joke.

Unrealistic for which character? What's that?

Unrealistic for which character? Well, I don't

know. Maybe Ramman has a thing for redheads and

maybe Tila has a thing for short guys. But it

was just a joke, but I found it funny, especially

that they gave Ramman that line because it seems

like something that the kids wouldn't even get

him saying when you got it, you got it. But those

are some of my Greatest call moments. What about

you? You know, I ran man on a chandelier. That

was kind of funny. Yeah. I do appreciate the

backstory, but the backstory reminds me of any

old World War Two movies. Where after the war

the husbands come back and The wives are expected

to quit work going back to be he says in the

beginning of the episode She was meant to be

my wife not go off and join the cat, you know

be the captain of the Royal Guard That is so

40s talk It's so degrading to women it really

really is and I know we're not the snake moment

yet, but I Ram man on a chandelier. That's all

I got. Alright, well, sounds like you have some

stuff to discuss at Snake Mountain, so we better

make our way to that location. You black -hearted

villain! Prepare to defend yourself! Alright,

sir, we'll continue your thoughts now that we're

at Snake Mountain. What do you have to say? Who's

writing this episode? Oh my god. Janice Diamond

and Paul Dini is a masterful writer. He really,

really is. But if you really look at Wizard What's

-his -Nuts, he's the ultimate chauvinist. He's

more of a chauvinist than Casey Jones was in

the TMNT 1990 film. I just didn't like it. The

other thing was... Have we asked before, and

this has nothing to do with the actual plot of

the story, but have we asked before, or have

you mentioned before on the show when there have

been times where He -Man should not know something

that Adam knows? I think we've talked about some

of that earlier on in episodes. It happened again

here, like Tila's old boyfriend line. Oh yeah,

it was like it was common knowledge for everybody

to know that. Yeah. And all this love scorn crap

needs to go this is supposed to be an action

cartoon damn it there hasn't been much of it

Well 21 minutes or so 21 minutes to money Master

of fear. So you are the scarecrow. Oh god, that

was the worst like when when what's Locust or

whatever his name is I like that character He's

a cool -looking character. He's got a cool voice

and when he said his master I thought for a second

there Skeletor hired out He outsourced I thought

he really did and then all of a sudden we get

this giant flame thing out of a Fireplace that

didn't exist. It was like hey Tim Allen's coming

down the chimney. Wait, we don't have a chimney

do we? Such a clause in this episode. That was

definitely weird when we had the spirit of evil

where the spirit of evil and we hadn't even been

introduced to him before and then all of a sudden

he's there. So that was kind of weird, a little

bit jarring, which also led to one of my moments,

which is He -Man is stronger than fire. Like

so far we've had back -to -back episodes, one

where he has manhandled a tornado and basically

been stronger than wind. And now he's stronger

than fire because apparently there's like It's

almost like he punches fire Can we get back to

human being stronger than actual physical things

And not these like elements. Are we what's next?

He's gonna battle water in the next episode No,

we've already had that I'm sure And a little

bit, too. I don't mind a love story. I don't

mind that there being some type of romantic element.

I mean, we do have some female characters, etc.

So that's fine. But don't ever have a plot point

be that the way we're going to battle this evil

or this spirit or win this thing is through the

power of love. That's all I could think about

when they said that. They literally said the

words, the power of love. Give me a break. I

don't need the power of love being an actual

physical thing that can battle anything. Like,

love story or minor love tones to an episode,

fine, but love is not a magical power that's

going to overpower some other power. I know that's

a lot of power. but you know this is the power

to bring skull yes with he man versus the thing

the monster the fire monster whatever the hell

we're calling him i don't i didn't see it as

he man punches fire like you did i saw it more

so like what the what the thing said the thing

is evil incarnate and he man is is like The best

person in the universe or the mighty, you know,

the person with the most good in the entire universe

and etc So I saw it more of the as a good versus

evil battle But it what you're saying about it

does you know, he man punching fire? Maybe maybe

he's the fifth element. Maybe he easily lose

secret husband or something. Who knows? Are any

other snake mountain moments for you? No. All

right. Well, let's get to award time then Thanks

for watching Alright, it's award time, sir. So

for episode 50, Wizard of Stone Mountain, does

anybody get the pleasure of being handed a power

sword or the displeasure of being hit with a

Havoc staff? As much as I hate to do this, but

it's more so for Janis Tymon than it is for Paul

Dini, but the writers get Havoc staffs because

I'm sorry this this felt like an episode out

of the 1940s with the whole being degrading to

women of oh she was meant to be my wife not go

out into the workforce etc No 80s cartoons did

not need that kind of message. Any power swords?

No. Alright. I got one of each to give out. I

will give a hammock staff, not just to the writers

because I don't know who came up with it, just

in general because I've seen it in this series,

I've seen it in other series and or movies or

whatever, a hammock staff to the concept of the

power of love. Yes, love is a powerful thing

and can bring a lot of people together or can

conquer all etc etc But it doesn't actually have

physical magical power So yes Havoc staff to

the whole power of love thing I don't think I've

ever given a Havoc staff to a concept but There's

a first for everything episode 50 where we're

turning new stones over Power sword though to

Ramman because in this episode Ramman was a PIMP

Yeah, he was a player in management position

As far as episode rating I would have given this

a slightly stronger rating and because it had

a unique story I have a slight bit of backstory

for Tila I liked everything basically about the

episode until the power of love So that knocks

it down for me from what would have been a four

out of five I will knock it down a half step

to a three and a half You one one One orko for

Mike. One orko. We will agree to disagree. I

don't think it's that bad of an episode. Outside

of the power of love. It's the power of love.

It's... This whole... I know this concept was...

It had to have been around before the 90s. It

might have been here the first time I really...

The guy is emo as all hell about his love for

Tila. And then what makes this episode worse

is the ending, where we find out that his assistant

loves him with all of her heart, soul, being,

whatever the hell, and then all of a sudden they're

just together. Which, I should have had that

in my cast, in my Snake Mountain moment. Okay,

dude likes Tila. Tila does not like dude. Fast

forward, guy's assistant is ten times hotter

than Tila. Loves him. And he's blind to it? Dude,

I should have given him a Havoc Staff for ignoring

the Havoc Assistant. You can still do it. Get

with it, dude. You pick Teela over that girl,

you're crazy. Mr. Wizard, you are not. Oh Lord.

Alright, so we have hit a milestone. Episode

50, we will see what the next 50 have in store

for us. There was nothing I could do. Trapjaw

and Clawful had a laser ray. They blasted their

way right through the vault. And they found the

Horn of Evil? Yes, Triel. They knew all about

it. They said they were going to use it to control

Eternia. I've got to get to the Royal Palace

and warn Orko. But Eternia is in a different

part of the universe. How will you get there?

Orko left me his magic pyramid. It will take

me to him. Hey, sis! I want to come too! I don't

know. This is serious. Please, please! Alright,

yuckers. But none of your dumb jokes. I promise!

Right, the next 50 begins with episode 51, Dre

-L's Return. We're also starting a new week.

The air date would have been Monday, November

14th, 1983. The writer is Robbie London. This

is his seventh episode so far that we've discussed.

Listen carefully to these titles. We've had Diamond

Ray of Disappearance. We've had Disappearing

Act. We've had Dawn of Dragoon. We've had Double

-Edged Sword. Then you have two that don't have

any Ds in it. Obese and Sideshow and The Royal

Cousin. And now we're back to Driel's Return.

This guy likes the letter D. But again, we gotta

also mention that maybe it was just the episode

he was handed. Because back in those days, I

don't know if there was... I think they made

their... For a lot of the times, they wrote their

own episodes and then just submitted them and

then people chose which ones to go ahead with

and which ones not to. But that's just me. I

have a funny thing for alliteration, I guess.

But some of these episodes were good episodes,

so you know Robbie London is a decent writer.

As far as the plot for Driel's return, Driel

and Yuckers appear on Eternia, warning Orko that

the Horn of Evil has been stolen from Tralla

by Clawfall and Trapjaw. At Castle Grayskull,

the villains use the Horn of Evil, overpowering

the sorceress. Orko arrives and takes the Horn

of Evil from the villains. Orko and Yucca are

captured, but Driel escapes and informs Adam,

Cringer, and Tila. The heroes manage to defeat

the villains, but Yucca accidentally activates

the Horn of Evil. And then we'll get to that

last part here in a little bit. As far as how

they solve their problem. Let's just get to the

plot of having an episode in general where we

see a reappearance of Driel. and the Trilunds

being returning to Eternia, the whole Horn of

Evil, and that has powers that can overpower

the Sorceress Setter. What did you think of the

plot in general? I liked the plot in general.

I always liked seeing Drael. Not so much this

new dumbass character. We also saw a third trial

and they all had different letters on there because

the other one just had like a T and the Yuckers

has the Y and Orko has the O which I never necessarily

had put together that I just thought he had just

an O or you know whatever on his thing it's just

part of the design I didn't know it was necessarily

supposed to be for Orko. Oh yeah marketing, Mattel,

oh yeah. They all have a letter representing

him. Yuckers had a Y on his cape and The other

child had a T. So, I found that interesting.

I don't remember the... Oh, was the other...

Right at the beginning, the one that was holding

the, like, the gatekeeper guy that informed them

that the horn had been stolen. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

That was Montork. No, that wasn't Montork. That

wasn't Uncle Montork? No, no. It was just a general

generic, like, guard from Jolla. Oh. Okay. Huh.

Yeah. Uh -uh. Uh -uh. Um, I always liked seeing

Dre -El. Um... Yonkers felt like... watching,

um, Curly Joe Besser. It's really what it felt

like. But as a kid? Uh, yeah. Like, really, really,

really bad. It's like... Um, it just... I don't

know. I like the episode, I like the plot for

the most part, but it's just so generic. I found

it interesting that we had, you know, an artifact

this time that was being safe kept in Trala and

that somehow Clawfall and Shabdra doesn't really

explain how they got there and how they stole

it and how they get back but interesting that

they have this artifact that's being kind of

safe kept there and that the evil warriors are

getting it from there to bring back and that

that's how they're gonna use it so that part

I had no problem with and bringing characters

back is always usually a good thing unless they're

like super annoying which Driel is not. Your

drill is not because it's a love story for or

go and I don't mind the love story for or go

I just last episode I couldn't believe Anybody

wanting to have a love story with Tila? Yeah,

so we have love story backed up by another love

story I do like the part of the plot that that

we have like the annoying little brother coming

along because that we haven't seen a lot and

he man we know we've seen annoying cousins and

this and the other but to have like the little

annoying brother of another character um that's

not like i said it's not 100 unique but it's

somewhat of a unique plot line for he -man so

i don't mind that um i just have a major problem

with the ending part of the plot but we'll get

to that um and i should mention that for the

first time today we've had some evil warriors

appear like we mentioned it's a clawful and trap

draw that's the only two we see but it's a welcome

uh site Since we haven't seen any at all today,

and we do have a random appearance of King randor

I I don't know what it was about the episode

I honestly don't remember even seeing him, and

I just watched this before we started recording

It was just like a random spot, so it was kind

of weird and the PSA was all about playing safely

and To be careful because you might blow a horn

of evil and unleash power that can overpower

the sorceress I guess I guess playing safely

is a good thing. Since it's part of the plot,

let's talk about what the Horn of Evil releases

out of itself to conquer the Sorceress. Black

smoke. It's that or it's that creeping dread

thing from 50 episodes ago or whatever it was.

The creeping Horak or whatever the hell it was.

Horak creeping. Yeah, it was definitely an interesting

weird ambiguous thing that didn't really get

explained except for it made things evil Yeah

But whatever how convenient for the plot the

lyrics are right friggin there on the friggin

horn and that Before we go down that Nasty rabbit

hole. Let's try to find something good to say

at Castle Grayscale. In your shower, approaching!

There it is! Jumping Jupiter, it's much bigger

than I thought! Attack track, can you destroy

the meteors? You even need to ask? Just tell

me when to fire! Fire! Nice shooting! Naturally!

There's one more to go. Malfunction. Machine

broken. Lasers will not operate. There's still

one meteor left. It's heading right for the city.

By the power of Grayskull! All right, well I

am going to go first at Castle Grayskull because

I basically have already talked about all of

my good moments and that is I appreciate... The

return of Driel and the Tralons and different

personalities like that, that's cool. I appreciate

Clawful and Trapjaw being involved, and I appreciate

the Little Annoying Brother plotline for being

somewhat unique. Those are the good things about

the episode, Mike. I like Driel's return. I could

do without the little brother, although I did

like when he got his just desserts at the end

of the episode. I thought that was really good.

Well, I too should say that I like the fact that

the little brother being the annoying one allowed

Orko to be the more mature. There's nothing that

Orko did wrong in this episode. Oh, and no, not

at all. So I liked Orko in this episode. I'm

surprised you didn't praise the sense of humor

of Attack Track. Oh yeah, I did like that. Attack

Track was funny. That was awesome. And then poor

Cringer, he has to get up and go to work twice

in one day. Yeah, after avoiding it at all, the

first episode we talked about made up for it

in this episode. Oh yeah, but that's all I had

was those two. I mean, there was good stuff we

talked about. Good Attack Track, Orko, Trapjock,

Clawful, Driel. Character -wise, we're doing

good in this episode. Storytelling -wise and

plot devices, not so good. No. Let's get more

into that. But to do so, we need to travel to

Snake Mountain because bad things cannot be spoken

at Castle Grayskull. um yeah i have short and

sweet ones well go over your short and sweet

ones what the hell kind of name is yuckers yuckers

what the hell kind of weapon is the horn of evil

lame uh yuckers is annoying but he's not as annoying

as some of the cousins that we've seen before

yeah that's true Why are the villains working

without Skeletor's knowledge? Now I know we've

seen this before sometimes, but usually we would

see maybe one or two times like a scene at the

end where they go back with their tails between

their legs to Snake Mountain, yet there's nothing

of that here. Or a scene at the beginning that

shows why they're doing it. Yeah. So yeah, that

was kind of out of nowhere. Yeah, because the

storyteller just said they broke in, they stole

it, and they left. And we get no telling of how

they got there. Yeah That is one annoying lady

gag me song was like hey Lady Gaga in the 80s

yay That song was so fake sounding first of all

It was I don't know why they didn't just have

the voice actors just and wasn't like they were

singing for real Just have them sing the damn

song on the mic instead they dubbed in a song

that clearly sounds like it's not coming from

those characters. It's a terrible song. The freaking

whole idea that the solution was for them to

grab the music off of the Horn of Evil, which

consisted on the one shot of three notes. They

just had a piece of paper with three huge notes

on it. And then for Keeman to be like, oh, I

need to blow into the other end. Well, now we're

just getting into stuff we don't want to talk

about on air. But that was just weird. You had

to reverse blow into the horn and then sing this

ridiculous song. That whole part of the episode

ruined it for me. Yeah. If you're going to have

a return of a character like Driel, do something

with her other than this. I mean it was fine

if they would have came up with some other solution

other than her and Orko doing a duet that wasn't

even real. Yeah. I like how they have this whole

like thing and how it's they sing the song and

everything's blah blah blah and then we have

a random trap job moment thrown in there at the

end. Like I didn't even know he was still in

that scene and then all of a sudden he's at the

end being like What what has he been doing over

there the whole time? Um, I just found he's been

trying to get stuff plugged into his arm because

that's the that's the only thing he can never

get his attachments to work Well, then he tries

to get a fly swatter. Come on now. Um, I thought

I thought it was a spatula. It's a fly swatter.

Same thing. Um, sometimes used as as one in the

same. Um, I love how it's so I mean, I'm saying

this as a bad moment, but I love how it's so

prototypical Cartoon where the bad guy clearly

has a chance to do something and just doesn't

do it It's about four times when he even says

he even tells us all I need to do is blow in

this horn one more time Well, then frickin do

it Yeah Nobody's stopping you right now. This

is not a moment where we need to wait. This isn't

like oh I could I could capture this person but

i want to use him for this or all i could kill

him and but i want to spit in his face and taunt

him first it's nothing like that this is all

i need to do is blow in the horn i'm holding

the horn there's no there's no purpose there's

nothing to gain for me waiting but i'm gonna

wait and not do it right now that bugs the crap

out of me i don't care if if bad guys miss the

chance because they're vain because they wanna

get that one little witty comment in there or

because they wanna use this as something to gain,

but to miss your chance for it, no reason whatsoever,

was silly. Alright, I'm done ranting. Anything

else? That was... yeah, no, I... I wish they

would have had more of an adventure. If Dreella's

gonna come back and she's gonna go all gaga over

Orko and they're gonna have their little lovey

-dovey story, well, I like those characters and

I like that they're... what unquote together

even though they live two worlds apart um i wish

it was something other than the little brother

screws everything up and and then the villains

come in and i just wish it was something else

i really do but at least yucker's got a pointy

hand instead of a baseball cap to end the whole

thing all right let's see what we have as far

as awards and rankings Don't worry, Triel. You're

safe with me, and... Triel, run! It's only me!

That wasn't funny, Yuckos. It was downright mean.

A joke isn't funny when it frightens someone.

Alright sir, for the last time today we get to

hand out some hardware. Power Swords are Havoc

staffs. Do you have anything to hand out? I'm

gonna give a Power Sword to Orko and Driel together.

Not for the song, but as a couple. And Orko,

they're kinda like parents to Yuckhead. So I

did like that, but that's about it. I will also

give a power sword to Orko because it's a rare

occurrence where he does everything right in

an episode. Nothing annoying, no tricks or spells

that go wrong, no hijinks, he was... Wait, didn't

this one start off with a spell? Well, stuff

with the man -at -arms, but like... Yeah, oh,

okay, yes. For the plot, he didn't do anything.

For the actual plot, he doesn't mess anything

up or complicate anything. So for that, I give

him a power sword. I don't have a Havoc staff

to hand out, even though I could give it out

to whoever put that song together. As far as

ranking goes, you have given the first episode

today a 1 orko on Temple of the Sun. And a 1

orko on... 1 orko for Wizard of Stone Mountain.

Driel's return must get better than 1, right?

2. He's upgrading to 2. The only reason why it

gets a 2 is because D 'Riel returned. And there

were a couple of cool moments with Cringer. Briefly.

And Orko. Orko was really good in the entire

episode except for the beginning part where he

was his normal goofy self. But we're used to

that with him in Man in Arms at this point. But

yeah, no, I mean the plot to me felt very generic.

It felt like I've seen it many times before in

the last 30 -something years that the shows had

been on and gone. Yuckers is annoying as hell,

even though he did learn a lesson. Really, like

you were saying, there's no real plot for the

villains other than... There's no explanation

to the plot of why the villains stole the thing

other than the general thing of, hey, let's...

Go steal this powerful item that we never even

knew anything about because Skeletor didn't tell

us and let's go to the Castle Grayskull and let's

destroy the Sorceress without him even knowing

anything about this. I like that we have a lot

of characters that we haven't seen in a while,

Driel, and we have some actual evil warriors.

Horco's doing everything right. You know outside

of the terrible ending this again would have

got it better I had two episodes in a row that

I would have rated better if it wasn't for the

ending I knocked the other one down from four

to three and a half. I'm gonna knock this one

down to a three You know it could have been a

three and a half or a four without that song

moment But it's going down to a three for me

So it's all middle of the road for me with a

two and a half a three and a half and a three

today So we are going to take a quick break and

we'll be back with our overall thoughts and the

closing of the show Today we met Nepthu, a man

who wanted to become a leader and became one.

But Nepthu used his leadership for his own selfish

glory and in the end he got what he deserved.

Being a good leader takes a lot of responsibility.

But you must also be responsible when you follow

a leader. Don't do something wrong or dangerous

because someone tells you to. Think before you

act. We can't all be leaders, but we can all

choose what's right and wrong for ourselves.

This is not Generation 2. This is Generation

adventure, Malak thought he could do whatever

he wanted, but instead he found that when you

do something wrong, you may get away with it

for a while, but sooner or later you have to

answer for it. Fortunately for him, Malak had

friends who cared about him and came to his rescue.

All of us make mistakes, but doing something

wrong when you know it's wrong really doesn't

make sense. Sooner or later, it catches up to

you. Until next time, bye. Pixels and the Animation

is the next cartoon review podcast series in

the GeekCast Radio Network's long history of

review series. We've had Transformers, He -Man,

and Mask as far as the cartoon review podcasts

we have done. Now we bring in TV's Mr. Neil as

he and TFG and Mike break down nine video game

cartoon series. Steve Megatron will join us for

the Mega Man and Sonic episodes. We will be reviewing

and analyzing every episode of the Mario, Zelda,

Captain and Mega Man, Donkey Kong and Sonic cartoons.

You can expect us to go in -depth and also talk

about the game franchises that spawn these cartoons.

So tune in Summer 2013 as we find the pixels

in the animation. In today's story, you saw what

happened when Yuckers sneezed and accidentally

blew into the horn of evil. He was just playing

around and didn't mean to do anything wrong,

but the results were just as bad. Of course,

there aren't any horns of evil in your house,

but there are many things that can be just as

dangerous. Many people have been hurt because

they were careless and played with things like

knives and matches and glasses and tools. So

as He -Man always tells me, playing is fine,

but play it safe. Alright sir, it's been a long

time since our last episode, so it's a good time

to check in on how we feel and how we think after

these three episodes as we get all revved up

for a long run of future episodes as we, you

know, we just have eclipsed the 50 episode mark.

Obviously there was way more than 50 episodes

in this series, so how are you feeling moving

forward after today's episode? Alright 51 right?

Episode 51. Alright so the next 14 episodes which

will be the end of season 1 because there's only

65 in season 1. The next 14 episodes better have

amongst them some better moments for me. Yeah

that means we only have about 4 or 5 episodes

left before we're done with season 1. Yeah season

1 ends I think episode 22 or 23 of the podcast.

lost a look and check but uh... but you know

i like i kept saying i wish three l's return

with something something different something

that we hadn't seen before and sadly it wasn't

uh... wish wizard of stone mountain just Oh,

Temple of the Sun, again. Yeah, no. I didn't

hate any of the episodes as much as you did,

but I didn't love any of them. I thought they

were all just kind of middle of the road episodes.

So it could have been a much worse return than

we got. Also could have been a better return.

But it's all about returns today, and we'll get

more to that here in a little bit. But I definitely

am interested to see... I have a feeling we might

have to suffer through a few more season one

episodes and then hopefully we'll get some new

blood once season two starts and have some more

things to talk about. But as it is, we do still

have 14 episodes to go. We'll see how season

one ends. Is it going to end on a high note or

a low note? Yeah, season one will take us through

episode 22 of the podcast starting with episode

23. Only five episodes left. Yep. Alright, so
