GeekCast Radio Network and the Pop Culture Network.
This is from the Command Center, the podcast.
This is episode 29. I am one of your hosts, TFTM
Mike. Joining me from PCN is Scotty Cash. Hello.
Hey, how you guys doing? First of all, You know,
I just what I just realized is we're we're a
collaboration, but I don't think we play these
on pop culture network No, you don't what kind
of collaboration is that? I don't know. So this
is a collaboration between the geek cast radio
network and scott scotticash from his home computer
Pretty much. Yeah. Well, we're gonna have to
have a talk with these guys about that. Yeah
You can do that. They're your friends. I don't
even like those guys, but okay, right? Especially
that bearded one that's unmasked. He's so rude
I know, right? Also joining us once again is
the Super Sentai guy, Spirit of the Vault Matrix.
Hello. Hello. How are you? Very tired. Yes, very
tired. So we've got a couple of news items to
get through before we get to our topic of discussion
today. First of all, San Diego Comic -Con has
come and gone, and the legacy Green Ranger, White
Ranger Morpher is going for over $400 on eBay.
Yay, go Comic -Con. The other thing that was
released and known about was... Actually, I'm
gonna talk about the smaller stuff first, then
we'll get to the big giant head in the room.
Shout Factory is releasing seasons 8 through
12 of Power Rangers. It includes Lightspeed,
Time Force, Wild Force, Ninja Storm, and Dino
Thunder. So they're releasing that. And then
the giant... Head thing at Comic Con was all
Power Rangers legacy the first 20 years coming
out December 3rd 2013 which means that seasons
8 through 12 and then 13 to 20 are coming out
in between that time Tom the price Yeah, okay
so featuring over 270 hours of entertainment
on 98 DVDs available only from shoutfactory .com.
I'm actually looking for the price in this press
release. There is not a price yet. Yes, there
is not a price yet. Okay, now I forget, I think
I told you Scotty, I told somebody about this.
The way I compare the Power Rangers the first
20 years legacy giant head DVD set is I compare
it to the law -and -order Set that came out a
couple of years ago the law -and -order complete
series DVD set was a hundred and four DVDs for
$700 this is 98 DVDs It's got to be somewhere
around the four or five hundred dollar mark.
I'm only that it's gonna be about three to three
fifty Yeah, the only the only the only reason
I would argue that fact is because Law and Order
was ginormous, you know, with people that can
afford DVDs. Power Rangers was always big with
children that, well, can't afford DVDs. So I
would imagine that they're going to try to make
this as cheap as possible. If that makes any
sense at all. Well, what I'm saying is it goes
to DVD count, really. Is really what what the
price goes to and if the law and order set at
104 DVDs is 700 and that this big headset is
gonna be 98 DVDs you would have to think it would
be somewhere like Spada said anywhere, but I'm
gonna guess somewhere between 300 and 500 I'm
going 400 I'm going 399 99 just because all of
the bonus features and all that yeah, yeah, because
it's 270 hours of Entertainment in total so but
that's gonna be interesting You know what's gonna
really suck on that is if people don't pick it
up right away the aftermarket It'll be a thousand
dollars on eBay. I guarantee it. I decided that
I'm just gonna rob shop factory and to steal
one Right I'm gonna go stealing like a like a
like a like a robber Yeah, it might be easier
to just find the black nerds house and steal
it from him Yeah, I know right is he gonna get
one He got one. He didn't get one Well, they
they did some They did some skit shout factory
did some skit with him and they're like, yeah,
you can't have this anyway I never heard of that
YouTube guy. He's a YouTube guy. Yeah And I will
actually post the link in the post for this episode
of the podcast showing off how the DVDs fit into
the legacy first 20 years how they fit into the
head it's basically Hat racks in the back Is
what it looks like to me, but I will I will link
this in the post from TV shows on DVD calm So
we are starting a whole new journey here and
from the command center. I have only seen The
first four episodes of Megaforce. It's alright.
Well, we'll get to it when it finishes. That's
the way I'd like to do it But right now we're
going to go back in the time machine and we are
going to go back to August 28th, 1993 when Day
of the Dumpster premiered on Fox Kids. Yes, that's
right. I said Fox Kids, not this for kids TV
or Fox Box or any other 90s craft that they tried
to turn it into. What you listeners are going
to hear is you're going to hear the Mighty Morphin
signal. Whatever the hell it is. And then after
that is when you queue up your DVD, your Netflix,
whatever, as far as being able to watch this
commentary. So here comes the signal. And need
a shower. I was going to say, for 10 ,000 years,
Rita looks awfully young. She looks good. I hope
when I'm 10 ,000 years old, I'm mightily attractive.
You know, I've said this before and I'll say
it again. When I first saw the Megazord in this
opening sequence of the beginning of the intro
to the show, I'm like, hey, it's a live -action
Voltron. I was actually in Toys R Us right before
it aired, and I didn't know what it was, and
I'm like, it's a new Voltron! I know, right?
Yeah. we should also say we didn't say this in
the intro to the podcast but um august 28th 2013
20 years after the fact this is spada's birthday
happy birthday sir thank you thank you yes i
turn old yes you turn old oh man i love that
intro it's damn good yeah somewhere on a distant
planet called mars somewhere in the california
desert A cop light blinks. Those are the worst
space suits ever! We should be dead! Normally
when I'm in space and I see a giant dumpster
thing, I immediately try to rip the lid off.
See, the other problem I have with this in space
thing, that they're on the moon, it's daylight!
It should not be friggin' daylight on the moon!
Are we for sure it's the moon? Pretty sure it's
Saturn. No, it's the moon. There's no water!
Yeah, there's no water. Well, the moon, it would
have to be the moon because that's the only place
astronauts have been able to go. And in the Asian,
or whatever the Asian version is, Jew Ranger,
it's Mars. and the youth center nice leg root
shakes i know right you know this whole juice
bar is an insurance nightmare i know teenagers
martial arts and gymnastics yeah and this was
93 so yeah really really bad um hey trini's keeping
it safe she's just doing a little bit of yoda
yes she's just doing a little bit of yoda yes
yoda wait a minute she was awfully close to that
dis how did but uh yeah how did trini get over
to that dismounting kimberly dismounting oh god
here we go And isn't that the hallway from the
school? Yeah. It's all connected, dude. It's
all connected. Yeah. It's true. Man. You know,
I look at Bulk now, and I look at him, I looked
at him in Samurai. He hasn't changed much over
the years. He's just gotten older. He's a little
bit skinnier now, I'd say. He is a horse here.
Yeah. Boy, that's not a salt or anything. I feel
like some pepper with that shake. OK, now this
is the moon. this is the moon yes but the reason
why i said it shouldn't be daylight in the in
the earlier scene when she landed is because
it points it then the transition it went to it
showed earth right so what's closest to the earth
i mean she can't be on the friggin sun she can't
be on venus or mercury and i don't think it would
earth isn't would not be that close to mars no
it wouldn't so yeah Billy is so unsure of himself
here. Why does Jason kind of remind me of Ralph
Macchio? Because they're both extremely handsome.
Pick Billy, pick Billy. The bulk and skull walk
in on your guys's screen yet. I think I'm a little
far a little ahead of you guys Yeah, cuz we're
at the oh no here they come there. They are I'll
pause it for a second or two Now they're trying
to be karate masters they just want to be loved
right Bone could do a sumo if he gained about
500 pounds One thing that always struck me about
this show is if these kids are supposed to be
in high school, why do they look so damn old?
Well, no different than any other hot quote -unquote
high school show like I don't know really those
guys were those were teenagers Yeah, but okay,
I would use Dawson's Creek well, yeah, that was
later, but At the time that this was out, I would
use Saved by the Bell as an example, as a better
example of kids in high school. So you want a
bunch of Justin as Power Rangers. Yeah, that
went over well. No. What I'm saying is that.
They just don't seem to be as high school age
as they should be, like in that in that scene
with them doing the karate stuff earlier. Gotcha.
Hey, this is why they don't want Tommy part of
their team, dude. They're just not enough room
with this table. You know how you got that spot
at that restaurant? They just can't move. It's
like Samurai. Something balks face every episode.
Oh no! Earthquake! Earthquake! Even though nothing's
actually moving. Well, there's stuff falling
on my screen. Hello, stock footage! That's not
stop footage. Let me know when it shows alpha
for you guys Wow, how are you so far ahead? Yeah,
I hit play when you guys did Wait is Kevin I've
never noticed he had a teddy bear. Yes. Yes.
Well, it's a teddy bear with a robot head So
it's it's obviously showed alpha for you guys.
Yes now I'm behind you. Thanks guys You're welcome
Boy, we really need to work on this for the next
episode. We'll see how you guys like it another
earthquake We're all conveniently in our we're
already conveniently in our teleporting positions
Hold on don't move though By the power of fast
forward Let's see I like that transition Where
they were teleporting. Especially for 93. There
wasn't a lot of stuff like that. That was cool.
Oh my god. This is the same thing I do when I
get teleported into the places that I'm unaware
of. I just start touching stuff. We're already
wearing primary colors! Yeah, they um... Well
again, the way I'm looking at this now is holy
crap. It's all sketched out. Oh god, it's a giant
floating head! But everybody's okay with that
though. Well, the way I'm looking at this show
now is with all the primary colors thing is it's
sketched out just like WWE has. Oh god, I just
realized something. This is 1993. Zordon is using
Proto Skype. That's why he looks so gra -bad.
I know, right? Skype version zero point zero
zero one zero point zero zero one. He's using
the beta version. I was going to say he's using
the alpha version. Oh, I get it. Here we and
you read your footage. Yeah. Here we have Rita
on a bike, which she never ever had any other
time in this episode or in this season. Yeah.
Or series. Yeah. Or series. She used it to fly
around Tokyo. She is the wicked witch of the
globe. Actually, she torn into children most
of the time. In Zyuranger, maybe. In Zyuranger,
yeah. Yeah, Zyuranger. Or Chu, Ju or Chu? I can
never remember how it's called. Ju. Ju. Ju -ranger.
They got pagers! It's better than a cell phone
morpher well cell phones back then yeah It'd
be like how am I supposed to more for this bag
phone? I'm gonna plug this into a wall or something.
I have no signal Those Zords looks so awesome
still to this day I agree and The and the Americanized
versions of the helmets still look terrible.
I know or they different in the And the Japanese
version yeah, they change every now and then
they lose the clips Okay, that's the only difference
yeah, I can live with that that and training
is a dude You know I did an interview with Marigold
Scott and one of the writers on the Transformers
Prime Beast Hunters comic and She said as a kid
she always like trini versus kimberly she always
thought trini was was the more intelligent one
out of the two and i was like yeah but trini
never did anything she was off with billy in
some basement doing some technical thing kimberly
was the more agile one maybe she just felt threatened
by her How many times and I'll ask this again
throughout the commentaries How many times in
the series have they actually used the outside
of the command center said very few times because
it's an actual art museum Yeah, oh and I never
noticed but that's a composite that shot right
there where they walk out It's a composite shot
between the museum and the out rock cropping
from Star Trek where he fights the Gorn. Oh my
god You know that for a fact yeah Never I never
noticed that before but I remember reading somewhere
that they've composited those two together Wow
And Rita's palace and Finster is making monsters,
this is how I actually make pudding That does
not surprise me we are going to wait a minute
wait a minute wait a minute This is their way
to fight teenagers Yeah, yeah really yeah pudding
monsters great somebody my grandma screams at
me just like that too I Don't want to Buddies
I Do enjoy how they they they kick the crap out
of them for a while Yeah And by kick the crap
out of them, it's mildly perturb them. Yeah,
that's true. We're gonna hold you guys forever
Like Jason is the only okay Trini a little bit
but like you guys were saying earlier, how is
gymnastics? You know You know a part of martial
arts. Okay sure Jason I can see Getting it right
off the bat and being able to kick their ass
But the rest of them not so much and it's point
proof positive with Billy Oh By the power of
their mighty zippers All right. Oh Block block
it hip talks. Wait, that's that was like the
most powerful hip toss ever Yeah, dude, those
are the first -generation putties spada Let's
do it I think I'm supporting notice the morphers
changed Like they were pointing out before another
point it now they were pointing in yeah. Yeah,
I Love that original morphin sequence though.
Oh, yes That's just awesome. I love how they
I love how they the the production design did
basically their faces inside the morphers with
the colors behind their heads. I thought that
was great. Green screen is wonderful. Yeah. Wait,
why are they on the top of the bed? But weren't
they in the desert? But yeah. All of a sudden
Billy knows how to fight. Yeah, they did gain
power quote -unquote Yeah, but you got to think
that they would still have to know how to use
those still have to have some learning curve
on how to use the Downloaded into their brains
Yeah, they've never really actually really said
that the suits have any extra power or anything
like that the power becomes in like they said
it protects them more but it How does Rita Everett
- I've always wanted to ask this. How does she
get her wand back after she throws it to Earth?
Does Goldar, after he shrinks, picks it up and
brings it back or something? She actually has
one of those things that janitors have that they
have like their keys attached to. Where it just
zips back. A lanyard. She's got a really long
lanyard. Yeah. A lanyard that is one astronomical
unit. It just looked like Goldar had a bunch
of red on underneath his gold. That's a rash
for another day. Show it again, show it again.
See, and again, I don't know about the Sentai
version, but again, why I always thought of Voltron
when I saw this. I was just about to say that.
It's the exact same places. They each come from
a volcano, the forest, the desert, many different
places from across the globe, just like the lions
from Voltron. But you realize that Power Rangers
was out before Voltron. We've had this discussion.
Sentai was. Power Rangers was not. This was out
before Voltron was. No, it was not. Voltron came
to U .S. in 1984. This series aired in 1990 in
Japan. Did it? Chu Ranger, yeah. And the lions
came from under the water, in the forest, in
the desert, in the volcano, and the statue in
front of the castle. Yep. Didn't Voltron come
from the sky or something? No, the lions formed
Voltron. From the sky? Well, when they would
fly up into the sky, quote unquote. Yes. They
never used the dino tank enough. No, I never
did Now I'm gonna say something a little weird
but The amount of passion that the original Rangers
were able to get out of their performances I
don't really think has been matched especially
Jason Yeah 100 % Yeah, I totally agree on that,
I mean... And the audio, when they're in their
suits, in the original series, works better than
it does in current seasons, for some reason.
And he just bonks them over the head with his
sword. Hey look, Spada, it's a Red Optimus Prime!
You're supposed to be martial arts people you
should see that at that coming But again, it
goes to my point of they don't know how to use
it properly yet They you know, this is the first
time they've used it so I can forgive them Screwing
up on some of the moves in this first battle.
Yeah, I mean it makes it makes a better story
So they get a sword and he runs away. Yeah They're
like he's like I'm I'm I'm barely winning see
look, how'd she get it back already? I told you
how look I know and there's her bike in the background
Yeah, she hung it up on the wall like a good
girl So no one steals it Congratulations on not
dying No, I definitely like like that, you know,
they don't they don't know everything from the
get -go You know what? I mean, they're kind of
new to the situation kind of like the story with
With Superman. He doesn't know how to fly at
the beginning. He doesn't know how to you know,
do all his powers at the beginning It just makes
for a little bit more of an entertaining story.
No, it does. And I like that. I just what I don't
like is when they immediately like in later seasons,
as soon as they get into the resorts, they know.
Right. Out of you. That's what I'm saying is,
no, I agree with you. I prefer them not knowing.
Well, I think that wasn't it in Lightspeed Rescue.
Didn't they say they were trained to use the
Zords at one point? Yeah, that was so weird.
Yeah. I'm sure we'll get to lightspeed commentaries
in the future. He's worried about her hair, dude.
I'm just messing with you guys. Sike. Screw the
90s. Screw the 90s. Alpha is just... In this
scene, he is so annoying. nice nice and that
is day of the dumpster wow all right well if
you're following along with us that is the end
of day of the dumpster we are going to take a
quick break and we'll come back to discuss briefly
of our thoughts on re -watching this first episode

your great escape into comics. It's been a long
time, but back to action! Alright, we are back
and we just watched Day of the Dumpster. I still
enjoy watching this 20 years later. Absolutely.
You know we mentioned in the commentaries of
some of the nitpicks and I mentioned about some
of the and again It's mostly nitpicks for me
like I have not like there's to me. There is
nothing wrong with day of the dumpster It's a
good first episode it establishes every character
It kind of introduces some of the minor characters
like bulk and skull a little bit they you see
that they have a rivalry with with the With the
Power Rangers, even though they don't know their
Power Rangers. So I like that. I thought it was
a good, good story, Scotty. I agree. I mean,
I don't really, we've already pretty much had
these conversations in the, uh, in our discussions,
but yeah, I mean, I definitely, I mean, I definitely,
I wouldn't agree to do it if I didn't want to,
you know, I could watch, I could probably watch
seasons, you know, one and two and three, probably
just all the time, you know? Oh yeah. Yeah. Um,
And it's it's interesting going back and watching
them, you know, Spada, you said you picked up
on stuff you hadn't seen before. Oh, yeah. Yeah,
I've never I've never noticed Alpha having a
Teddy Alpha. I've never noticed that before.
Yeah, that was a little strange. It is it. It's
cool. But at the same point, being older now
and going back and seeing it and actually have
seen all of two ranger at this point, it's. both
cool and at the same point it at the same time
it's kind of oh if that makes any sense it does
for someone that has seen the the original version
of the show but on on my end it's like you know
like you know like we said like i picked like
like i asked about how many times do they actually
use the the outer set for the command center
uh... you know it was just stuff i'd never paid
attention because when i was a kid watching this
stuff is like oh cool martial arts mover oh cool
robots you know it wasn't trying to look for
stuff that i hadn't seen before and that's one
of the reasons why the podcast is going to do
commentaries is because of going back in noticing
stuff we didn't notice before All right, any
