Jason on Origins in Toy Collecting

About this Episode
Hi, this is Dan Gilbazan, and you're listening
to the Geekcast Radio Network. Jazz here, and
I am so digging the Geekcast Radio Network. Cliffjumper,
commence countdown. Five, four, three, two, one.
Toycast oh yes Listen to the only toy podcast
you will ever need Hello and welcome to an all
-new generation of whatever the hell podcast
this is as we get the origins of any and all
toy fans that we can I'm of course TF2 and Mike
and today's featured guest is one -fourth of
the A musical something or other cracktastic
plastic no guitar heroes. No drum kits. No nothing
It is Jason one -fourth of the cracktastic plastic
podcast. Hello, sir. How are you? I'm so good.
How are you? I'm glad I'm here too. I think I'm
glad I'm here too. Sometimes I wish I was still
asleep. Oh So yes we are here to get Jason's
toy story and toy collecting 42 questions all
about toy collecting. And I have been listening
to finally after you bugging me for two years
you haven't actually been bugging me for two
years but I remember like two or three years
ago when they started he's like hey I'm like
okay I'll check it out two years later. Seven
hours ago, I finally listened to about five episodes
of your show. As long as you get there, I don't
care. So Cracktastic Plastic, before we get into
the questions, just give the brief summary of
what you and your bandmates do over there at
Cracktastic Plastic. Sure. For years, probably
10 years ago, at least, we've been a band. We're
all musicians. play original punk rock music
and we travel the country on tour all the time
and for years and years we didn't even know this
but eventually learned that we all liked toys
and collected toys it's weird how it just didn't
ever really come up for a while and then once
we learned that we like toys then It was really
neat how each one of us had our own special line
that we specifically collected. Me and my brother,
who's in the band, we're Transformers guys, but
one guy's G .I. Joe and one guy's He -Man. So
we got a pretty good, you know, across the board
of vintage toys, the big lines anyway. And I'll
tell you what, a lot of tours and stuff have
been booked around going to toy stores and...
And so when COVID hit, you know, it kind of killed
the music industry, all things playing live and
all that. COVID really killed it. And it was
really a bummer to all of us, but we still always
talked and chatted about toys. And we're like,
you know what? We need to just hit record. And
so it was an excuse to still hang out with the
guys. And it's been a really great thing. Uh,
just, just getting to hang out with my musical
brothers and talk toys. And that's, that's about
two years ago. We've been doing this podcast.
Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah, folks. They do
almost every major line except the one that sucks.
I don't even know what you're talking about.
Those toys live in a trash compactor in a galaxy
far, far away. All right, and the sad thing is
I have about Ten or twelve different funko pop
versions So getting into the questions 42 questions
all about toy collecting what is or was the first
toy you remember having as a kid well, I Definitely
have to preface this with if I If I could have
one wish, it would be to have a better memory.
It's become more and more sad to me. As I've
been doing this podcast, I'm like, I live and
deal in nostalgia and I wish I could just remember
things better. You know, I just, it's terrible.
It's actually terrible. But growing up, You know,
it was three boys, so Spoodie, my brother who's
on the podcast, he's the youngest brother and
I'm the oldest. And we had a little bit of everything
growing up, your Transformers, He -Man and G
.I. Joe and such, but I can't even remember like
having one. The biggest thing that I remember
that like is an actual memory that I actually
remember vividly is in 19... Christmas of 1986,
we got the original NES, Nintendo Entertainment
System. Maybe that counts as a toy, I don't know
if it does. It had Robbie the Robot, so like
that's kind of a, it's a robot, so that's cool,
right? That's not a robot. That's not a robot.
That's like one step down from getting a light
bright with no lights. Yeah. I know we had a
lot of toys, but you know, my memory's just gone
on it. That's really the first thing I can kind
of remember. Yeah, it's funny. You got an NES.
I got a crappy Sega Master System. Who the hell
wants to... Well, as a Nintendo guy, we always
are like, oh, Sega looks cool. And Sega people
are like, oh, Nintendo looks cool. You know,
Sega didn't get cool until they introduced a
certain blue -spheric hedgehog and they went
the Genesis and 16 -bit rock. 8 -bit Sega sucked.
Like, come on, Alex Kidd, who the fuck is that?
Yes, you can curse if you want to. Really, seriously.
Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars and Reggie Jackson
Baseball are the only two games I remember having
for the Master System. If you were to ask me
name two Sega games, I couldn't. I can only know
the one. I only know Sonic. I just don't know.
Yep. It's just, I mean, that's, that's, they
built, I mean, Golden Axe and Golden Axe 2, I
remember those. So those were good, but like,
But again, that didn't happen until like the
Genesis era. The master system era was just like,
here have Reggie Jackson baseball and here have
this and have this mascot that we're never going
to use again. And we're not making that the face
of the company because if we did, we'd be bankrupt
in 1987, not 1990, whatever the hell they. Nintendo
had some pretty crappy games too. Yeah, but Nintendo
had the mascot. I guess. I guess. Technically,
Nintendo has several. I mean, okay, if you want
to get technical to mascots, technically Capcom
owns some of them. But I mean, they had Link,
they had Zelda, they had Mario, obviously. Mario's
number one. But they had the little dog from
Duck Hunt. If he's not a mascot, I don't know
what is. It's a mascot for everybody. That's
right, especially with that little laugh of his.
So, was there a particular adult who was supportive
of you playing with toys as a kid? Was there
anyone who was unsupportive? I definitely don't
remember any unsupportiveness. We were super
poor growing up. It baffles me beyond belief
how in the heck my parents afforded any toys.
let alone the ones we did get, but yeah, we had
toys there. They were three boys. I'm sure they
were just like, just get out of the house, you
know, just go play with stuff outside and quit
breaking our house. So I'm sure they supported
it all the way. Absolutely. And be like, damn
kids with your hipping and your huffing and your
ticking and your talking, go and play in the
dirt. Right. Back in my day, we had dirt for
toys. And we liked it. That's right. We ate it.
What? That's right. What types of toys were your
favorites to play with? Well, definitely, it
really, from all that I've been able to stir
up from my memory, it really is those big three,
Transformers, G .I. Joe, and He -Man, you know.
It was three boys, so we were just, you know,
smashing them He -Man into each other all the
time. GI Joe, those vehicles were awesome and
would carry things around. And I knew, and I
knew I loved Transformers pretty early, just
that puzzle aspect, you know. It's just so great.
So I was always, I knew forever, always been
drawn to Transformers. Very cool, very cool.
So... Always drawn to Transformers, would you
say that's the one toy that stood out to you
more than the others as a child? Oh, absolutely.
I mean, just from being poor, that's two toys
in one. I mean, that's two for one toys. You
can't beat that. They should have been charging
$40 or $60 for G1 Optimus Prime back in... I
don't remember what the prices were back then.
But like pricing today, imagine pricing today
back then. Maybe that's what Hasbro's thinking.
That's getting crazy. Do you prefer the label
of action figures, dolls, toys, or other labels?
Now, I definitely don't care at all. I do remember,
I feel like, I don't know, when I was a kid and
still playing, there's, you know, people were...
I don't know, other kids are mean. I just remember
getting picked on about it for being dolls. You're
supposed to say, uh -uh, it's action figures.
So I remember going through that, but now I don't
care at all. I love playing with my dolls, my
toys, all the things. They're not dolls, grandma.
Yeah, I think grandparents are the worst that
they really were. They didn't know. They didn't
know, but they still bought them all. Most of
them did. Good guys or bad guys, which toys were
your favorites to play with the most? I would
say, oh, good guys. I'm just, I'm a good guy.
I'm just a big old boy scout, good guy. So it
was, I don't know, always, you always want to
be the hero, right? So I mean, that's, that's,
that's what I remember, I guess. There you go.
There you go. What is or was your favorite toy
vehicle or playset? Well, I What do the transformers
even do you even consider them to have? No, those
are well get your microplex maybe, you know,
right maybe yeah, maybe this primes trailer,
maybe They didn't they weren't really play sets
like the other lines got play sets. So yeah Yeah,
that question is mainly for stuff like every
other host on the podcast of yours. Like Castle
Grayskull, or yeah, your Boulder Hill, or your
flags, or your this or your that, because yeah,
Transformers were the vehicle and all in one.
Did you and your friends or your family ever
pretend with your toys that you had? By this
I mean, did you say? I'm going to be this toy
and you can be that toy, like Jason can be the
the Coke bottle and Spoodie can be the piece
of glass or whatever. I don't think we did it
exactly like that, but what I do remember that's
pretty embarrassing. I have a couple of these.
There were definitely four of us that claimed
our Ninja Turtle weapons. And went around the
neighborhood, just breaking the heck out of things
and fighting each other. And, you know, everyone
took, wanted to have the nunchucks until they
hit themselves in the face with them. That's
right. Yeah. There, there was definitely, we
always feel like we always would run around and
be Ninja Turtles. And then, then as I got older,
um, This is the embarrassing part, the really
embarrassing one. Well, me and my friends, so
I knew I liked music pretty early too, but, you
know, being poor, we didn't have real actual
instruments. And so I definitely have memories
of definitely a friend of mine and we would,
you know, you'd have your broomsticks that would
turn into guitars. But I... remember having,
I can't remember the name of the G .I. Joe vehicle.
That's like this, uh, plane. It's like purple
jet thing with like two tail fins. And I, man,
I would play, it would be my guitar and I would
just play guitar on that thing. Just for hours.
So cool. Oh boy. Yeah. Like you're talking to
the wrong person. Yeah, I know. I see that toy
every once in a while and I'm like, that's a,
that's a cool guitar. I should get it just for
that. That's right. I should have a, a Fender
Stratocaster designed after the model of that
toy. Ooh, that's a good idea. Maybe, well, our,
our RGI Joe guy is our, is one of our guitar
players. So maybe I should talk him into doing
a vehicle inspired. paint job or something on
another guitar he builds that'd be fun that's
cool what features define a good toy to you how
true does the item feel in comparison to the
source material likeness well uh i mean i got
i got it i got it made with transformers it's
so easy to just they get there they're a vehicle
they're a robot they're a puzzle i mean there
are three things really and and Just I don't
know it makes it so easy to play with you know
As far as the second part of that I guess I've
learned recently that maybe and I'm from our
podcast I've learned this that I just assumed
that everyone was into the characters But but
like just speaking of Cory the GI Joe guy he
He is very like vintage only based the that toy
from that year Like just for example snake eyes
Like he only likes that one from that one year.
He if you know classified Oh, he doesn't care
at all. He doesn't the the character he doesn't
really Collect a character. He only collects
that one toy where me. It's like another toy
line Let's get the next Starscream, you know,
like gimme gimme gimme each time. So I Don't
know. I feel a connection doesn't matter if it's
a cloth cape or a plastic cape. You got to have
that coronation Starscream you do You gotta have
it So and I'm just waiting that they have not
done this yet. I I'm hoping that I was actually
hoping they would have done it with one of the
three or four variants of the kingdom Galvatron
uh -huh I wanted him to come with a crushed crown
oh yeah that would have been hilarious but uh
yeah I'm definitely not a I know a lot of people
get but hurt when it's not exactly animation
accurate or stuff but But I love the character.
That's what our imaginations are for, you know,
right? And that has gone out the window in the
last 43 years of my life. It seems like it sometimes.
No, I just want to play with that guy. Yeah,
there is no more actual intelligence now, ladies
and gentlemen. It's all artificial intelligence
now. Like, give me a break over here with your
AI this and your AI that. Like, oh, would you
like our AI thing to create a good intro? No,
I can screw up the intro on my own. Thank you.
As you can clearly hear in the beginning of this
episode of the show. And that's what they tune
in for. How's Mike going to screw it up this
time? How's Mike going to screw it up this week?
That's right. That's what it's all about. Oh
boy. So you walk into a store because I can't
say toy store anymore because those don't exist
except in Canada where toys are us basically
abandoned America Jackasses What does toy packaging
have to have to draw you in so you go into whatever
store? It is you see this this and this like
you see four different versions of transformers
What is the each of the packaging have to have
to make you go to one more than the other? It's
easy to think whichever one draws out the nostalgia
first. For Transformers, if it has those grid
lines or something, you're like, oh, what's this?
But I love seeing original art on packaging.
I think about all the Motu stuff, the origins.
just that those card backs are so freaking beautiful
and or like just the painted artwork and yep
like on the new castle gray school i could just
sit and look at that thing forever but um also
there are toy stores everywhere mike no there
aren't we make a point on every episode to point
out a toy store all over the country you do and
because they exist and we need to keep them open.
No, I agree. I'm not disagreeing with you, but,
but in general, you know, it's, yeah, that's
the point is that while yes, there are still
mom and pop shops or even some famous shops like
Kokomo, like whatever else. And as much as I
love, and I have been getting some pre -ordered
stuff from them, much as I love. Big Bad Toy
Store. Big Bad Toy Store is not an actual toy
store. As much as I love them and they're awesome
and everything, yeah, I got the whatever episode
it was you guys were talking about. There needs
to be a core class something or other. I forget
what people wanted. They wanted, oh no, I know
what it is. That's what we're waiting on. We're
waiting on a core class blaster. That's what
it is. So yeah, Elgin was saying that, but I
have the, uh, the core class sound blaster. He's
actually here in my hand. And the only reason
why I wanted that is because my two favorite
colors are black and purple. Yeah. Heck yeah.
And thank God Hasbro reversed their stupid ass
decision on windowless packaging. Yeah. I mean,
I, I didn't, I didn't hate it, but it made me
realize how much I would hold up to the same
thing and like. try to decide which one's paint
job was better. Cause when you don't have that,
you're like, Oh, I guess I'm just going to trust.
Yeah. Or, you know, you hold up two figures,
one's got a head, one doesn't. It's like, well,
this is an easy choice. Like, you know, Oh boy.
I'm glad they're getting back to it. That'll
be good. Absolutely. Absolutely. Do you open
your toys or do you leave them packaged? If you
keep toys packaged, do you have a specific criteria
for that? This is a huge conversation. This is
why these podcasts are three and a half hours
long, don't you know? I know, I know. Well, let's
just say I'm getting better. As a kid, even once
I get back into it as an adult, I feel like I'm
opening things, but there was definitely a point
during Combiner Wars where I got mad at the line
for inventing a new combiner. And I was just
like, oh Plus these cars look really cool and
packaged they did at the time so I just stopped
and I'm just like Nope, I'm just stopped and
I'm just gonna leave them all on card inbox and
for years I did that and I have a lot of a lot
of stuff on card and so recently it's been hard
and You know, it feels like each episode we do
is just therapy on like well These are toys that
need to be played with. That's their purpose
in this world. And that's what, you know, I need
to do it. And I will die soon. And why not experience
these toys? Man, we're only in our forties. If
we're dying soon, I should have been gone by
now. Yeah. I mean, you think about it once, at
least once in a while. And you know, it's like,
man, I just, I don't want to go and not have
had all the fun I could have with these things.
So I've definitely been opening up them a lot
more and it's helped to have a place to display
them. That also helps. I realize in those few
years I wasn't opening. I didn't have a really
great living situation that I could even do it.
So I just get them, look at them. either put
them on a wall for a minute and then pack them
away and just live in storage. But now that I
definitely have a place that I can display them,
it makes it a whole lot easier. And, and I'm
trying the thing that really the therapy that
I really need is what do I do with these boxes?
I have an attic and a garage full of big boxes
filled with little tiny boxes. And I just haven't
thrown away any box. I don't know how to do it.
I love the art. Going back to that last question,
the artist is a big part of it. I mean, I'm no,
I'm not playing with the box, but I don't know.
There's an attachment to it. I don't know. What
do I do? Mike, help me. Yeah. Help you, help
me, help you, help me. Right. How am I supposed
to help you when all of my boxes hold all my
toys behind me? When I can just easily just take
them out of the box, take a picture, put them
back in the box. I don't have to worry about
all the plastic being destroyed or twist ties
or cut ties or whatever the hell. Absolutely.
They enable you wonderfully. I'm keeping them.
Even though I know pop collectors that throw
the boxes, they get them, they take them out
and they throw the boxes away. And I'm like,
you're a mad man. How do you throw away any box?
I don't know how. Anyway. Yeah, I don't know.
It just, I mean. And it's harder because I know
that I'm not going to resell these. Right. For
that's probably the biggest reason on keeping
them. the boxes, I guess. I don't know, man.
So in the comments below, reach out to me. Help
me. How do you do it? Whoever can do it, you
crazy people. That's right. I don't know, man.
Like, but the thing, my biggest problem as a
43 year old is like, so I have exactly, well,
technically I guess Core Class Sound Blaster
does count, but. I have exactly three Transformers
action figures right now outside of Funko. I
have Kingdom Rodimus, I have Kingdom Galvatron,
I have this little core class Sound Blaster.
I have the box to Kingdom Rodimus. It's in the
closet. I have whatever box, Kingdom Galvatron.
He came in his box, but he... His box was weird
because he was an online exclusive. It's the
it's the behold version. It's the it's the it's
the it's the When Unicron, you know Remakes him
into Galvatron. It's the it's the cool purple
one. Yeah Yeah, so His box is just kind of brown
and nothing. So Yeah, but like I don't know man
like Again, going to the Funko Pops, like I can
take those in and out of box. They're fine. It's
easy. You can't take, if anyone out there listening
to the sound of my voice can take a transformer
out of the box and put it back in the box the
way it was before you took it out. It's not possible.
Well, also then how do you answer that question?
Like, cause pop artwork and boxes are very minimal.
The art that's on there, does it? the art have
anything to do with why you get a character?
Is it just all based on what's inside the box?
Yeah, it's not about the Funko Pop. You know,
it's not about the art. It's about the character
and all of that and everything else. So I don't
know. I don't know what to tell you when it comes
to boxes like I don't I don't play with these
like we used like that's one of the greatest
things about Funko Pop collecting is you don't
technically like nobody, none of us, anyone that
has more than three pops we're not all sitting
here in a dark helmet wing wing wing wing we're
not slamming their giant ass heads together we're
not doing that we're taking them out we're taking
cool photos and putting them back in the box
just so we don't have to worry about oh where
did this Star Wars funko pop head go because
it's a bobble head because of the license and
oh god where did this go or oh my god where did
the weapons go? Oh my god, yeah no. Oh I know
what I was talking about, transformation like
with the transformer stuff. As a kid, love the
transformations. Absolutely would do it all the
time. As an adult, I do not need Kingdom Galvatron
to transform into his freaking cannon. I just
want the robot. That's all I want. Like that's,
yeah so. All right, so this one's these questions
there are only 12 in so far 11 and so far They
get more difficult as they go If as a kid or
an adult you were only allowed to choose one
toy franchise to collect from which one would
it be and why? Oh the easiest question so far
Transformers give me that there more meets the
eye. I don't know if you've heard that but they're
amazing Absolutely. All right. As an adult, do
you prefer vintage toys or modern toys? And then
you're right up, right after that's the hardest
question you've ever asked ever. No, not yet.
I think this one's hard just because I'm being
honest with myself. I think it's easy for us
older guys to be like vintage all the way vintage.
But you know, like These toys keep getting better
every year. The engineering, the the paint, they
get better and better and better as toys. They
really do. So like I didn't want to just snap
answer to give some respect to modern toys. I
actually just got a Again, 99 % of the toys I
have are Transformers, but because of Elgin on
our podcast, we had his son on and he really
wanted to, who's like 13, I think, or 10 to 13,
he really wanted to talk about Fortnite toys
and we're like, what's a Fortnite besides two
weeks? Apparently it's a video game and there's
toys about it. which we all learned on this episode
but um so he brought a bunch I bought a couple
just you know just because I had to because when
you look at them in the store you're like well
that's really neat these are weird these characters
are there's a cat with muscles there's a pumpkin
headed dude there's all sorts of weird anyway
so I bought some of these toys and it's really
the first time I ever um, played with a toy with
your 25, 30 points of articulation and my freaking
mind was blown. I still can't understand how
this toy is so posable. I'm like, how does that
ankle even turn that way? It doesn't even make
sense to me. I'm like, and just blown away. And
I'm, I'm just amazed. And I was, I was really
happy that I let my sec. I could be so I'm amazed
by it. Even everyone on the show was just like,
I, so we started this episode about Fortnite
toys, expecting to talk a lot of shit about Fortnite
and we all ended up like really respecting these
toys. They were amazing. So modern toys are freaking
awesome. Yeah. But, but like I said, ideal in
nostalgia. Um, I love these, I love these toys
so much. If you just ask me why, I think I narrowed
it down because they're, they're just little
time machines to me. I can just touch one vintage
transformer and I am just shot back to being
a kid in the room. It's, it's unbelievable. This
like weird sense memory. I know we all have it,
but it's just, I don't know. It's just, it's
the the best way I felt to like slow down time
and like be a kid as long as I freaking can is
so important to me to just to embrace that and
just to hang on to that with all I can to just
stay a kid as long as possible and I don't have
to get old and uh that's why I have to choose
vintage but man big respects to modern toys Yeah,
absolutely, and I blame Jeffrey. This is all
that stupid giraffe's fault. I don't want to
grow up, I don't want to grow up, I don't want
to build a... wasn't supposed to take him literally
right yeah Jeffrey Jeffrey taught us all not
to grow up he might have been on to something
maybe but you know it's funny you mentioned that
how you can you know just look at or touch a
vintage toy and just be So for me what it is
is when I got a friend of mine gifted the kingdom
Rodimus to me and just out of the blue it was
the prime day or whatever whenever it was on
sale and I was like oh okay cool like literally
I forget which episode it is but if you listen
to any of our episodes a couple months ago whatever
it was in the middle of a show I get my buzzer
going. It's like nine o 'clock at night. The
dude that sent this gift to this to me ordered
it like six. It was one of those Amazon rush
delivery things. And I'm like, wait, what? I'm
like, hold on. And I'm like, go and I didn't
put the microphone on mute or anything. I'm so
unprofessional. I know, but like, you know, I'm
like, go. I'm like, holy crap. It's kingdom round.
And so when I picked this thing up first, I was
like, My god, I feel the waves of kibis Kane,
Florida because I remember where I was in 1989
When I had my original generation one Rodimus
Prime I was in kibis Kane, Florida with my mom
and her then boyfriend on vacation and I had
Some weird plastic sword and kingdom Rodimus
with me for some honor and not kingdom rabbit
the original Rodimus with me And I just, when
I, when I touched the kingdom, I was like, Oh
my God, this is basically a modern version of
the original toy, which is great because you
don't want them to do too many things to modernize
it, but it really does feel like that toy is
incredible. Yeah, it is. It really is. It's so,
so good. Absolutely. Out of your entire collection,
what is one toy you gravitate to more than the
rest? 100%. Starscream. He's my guy. I have,
I have all these toys. I definitely always have
a thing called see a Starscream by a Starscream.
I just can't not get him, which I answered earlier
about I more of an Autobot or, you know, more
of a good guy, but yet, you know, I know it doesn't
even make sense. Uh, I've had perfectly nice
people ask me, why do you like this guy? And
I'm like, I don't even know, cause he's a He
sucks as a person, you know what I mean? But
man, I love him so much. He's such a turd. Why
do you like this douchebag? He's never going
to lead the Decepticons. He's never going to
amount to anything in this hill. Hill means a
world of this world we're living in. I've tried
to like figure it out. Like what, it's not his
person or is it his personality? I don't know.
Maybe it's just that he's just simply one of
the most interesting characters, whether it's
good or not. Good. He's definitely always interesting
in every incarnation. And I have a soft spot.
And I think we all kind of sometimes will pick
a character and really just not army build, but
just go nuts with that guy. And it's always Starscream
for me. Yeah, very cool, very cool. You're saying
army build and all's I can think of is that very
first episode It's not the very first episode
of this show But it was the very first episode
of pawn stars that transformers was ever on and
it's this guy who's like, yeah I had him as a
kid and I had like all seven of these Fort Max's
which looked like to be in complete and Mint
condition out of the box and I had all the and
I'm like you have seven of the same damn toy
Like I get army building but come on Right. Oh
boy. All right. Even though there are always
toy lines that people never purchase, are there
any that you specifically and purposefully avoid?
This could be a toy line, character, et cetera.
Well, I think here's where we finally talk about
the elephant in the room and go to a place far,
far away. But I'll be honest. I, uh, Especially
after starting this podcast and and like just
diving in just 100 % to toys recently I am so
glad that I haven't didn't go down the Star Wars
toys path Because there's there's too many I
would be so broke. I love Star Wars the movies
the series everything I love everything Star
Wars, but I like the toys, but I am, I count
my blessings every day that I did not go to the
dark side with the Star Wars toys. Cause I wouldn't
have anything in my life. All my money would
go to Star Wars toys. I don't know how people
do it, but recently, you know, so like Like I
said, 99 % Transformers, but I've started dabbling
a little. I've started little, tiny little collections.
And I didn't even know I was doing it at first,
but I kind of started the bad guys. I'm like,
I love Skeletor, man. Skeletor's awesome. Why
don't I just pick up some Skeletors? And now
I have a whole Skeletor collection. And then
I'm like, you know what? Well, the Chrysalada
connection. I love Cobra Commander. He's awesome.
you know, and that voice, I'm just going to get
some Cobra commanders. So I'm like, and then
I realized, oh no, I'm getting all the bad guys.
And then I don't know what it was. I can't remember
what happened first, but maybe somebody just
gifted me one or it came like that. And I'm just,
and now I've got a little budding Darth Vader
collection. I have the pop, the bobble head that
just came out recently. I love it. It's awesome.
Oh, I know what it was. It was that dang Black
Series one. It got me some FOMO, and I was like,
ugh. But yeah, so I do have a little bit of Star
Wars now, but I'm not happy about it. I would
never tell anyone that I do, but - You just did.
Oh, whoops. Nothing. Nothing. These are not the
toys you are looking for I'm actually surprised
at So the transformers and we're not even too
funko yet but the transformers funko pops like
I Didn't want every single version of optimus
prime that funko is made I didn't want I know
I could give two craps less about the target
exclusive bumblebee I just want a normal everyday
bumblebee. No Come on. No, that's not a jet pack.
Those are his doors. That's not a jet. Those
are his open doors of his car mode. That's not
a jet pack. Oh, wait a minute. I don't know if
the NFT does have it because I don't do NFTs,
but they did a, they did. Well, there are a lot
of people. Well, some do. Side swipe i don't
know if the funko pop side swipe has a molded
on jetpack on his back as i've never seen it.
In person or in videos or anything like that
i'll have to look for that on youtube afterwards
but anyway like i wanted the same thing with
masters like. My masters funko pop collection
has grown but specifically to the two here the
hero and the villain of that series. I wanted
specific versions. I didn't want your normal
every day. Hey, here's he man with his sword.
I think I, I think I have one, but whatever battle
cat one's pretty awesome. Well, I do have the,
that's different because that's battle cat. That's
the four inch pops specifically when I started
doing the master stuff. I think I had Battle
Armor He -Man and Battle Armor Skeletor because
those are the Battle Armor ones and the moving
chest and whatever else. But like for my specific
collection for He -Man and Skeletor, I wanted
the Terror Claws Skeletor because he's metallic
and the Slime Pit He -Man because it's basically
the He -Man mold covered in green paint that
looks like Nickelodeon slime and it's awesome.
So I've tried my bad, but the same thing with
the Transformers ones. I'm like, okay, yeah,
I'm not going to get every, every, every version
of, of whatever. But, you know, and of course
now I'm, I'm on this whole anti, uh, Funko Transformers
kick because I think personally Funko just buried
the line in NFTs. Like I don't remember the,
the last new one we got was I think tracks and
Unicron were the latest two releases to the public.
Yes. I, but I just got that new optimist that
has lights and sound. Okay. Yep. Yeah, man. That
thing's awesome. Yeah. So, okay. Yes. Technically
four inch. Yeah. Those were the last ones before.
Yeah. Yeah. But like the, you know, how dare
you bury hot rod and NFT land. You bastard. So
pissed. So pissed. I want all those. Cause I
do, I have every Transformers pop and I want
every Transformers pop, but fucking NFTs man,
that just sucks. Just to see them and be like,
I'll never see it. And I know people are saying
now, oh, well they're out in the world. You can
go onto eBay, Mercari, whatnot, whatever. And
I'm like, yeah, I could. If I had the money to
spend on it, I could. But normal people don't,
not that kind of money. But yeah. Yeah, no, I
think gold optimist prime the last time I looked
at it was going for like $400 really I think
the last in the last hot rod I saw was like 140
was the last one I saw and Yeah, like and really
honestly out of the out of the NFTs like there's
hot rod Sideswipe rumble or frenzy depending
on but it's called rumble because it's based
that's the other thing is that the it's based
on the toy not the anime, which is fine, it's
whatever. There's Gold Optimus and then there's
the six inch Devis. I only want Hot Rod, Devastator
and the Gold Optimus. I don't want Side Swipe
or Rumble. But yeah, all right. We jumped ahead,
folks. Way ahead. You can expect by question
16, we would be talking about Funko this soon.
Are there any toys in the past or currently that
you wish you had not bought them? Are there any
toys that you may have sold you regret letting
them go? The first part, not really, but recently,
even just last weekend, I was in a Ross. I don't
know if you have Ross's where you're at. Yeah,
I know what they are. But there's a, you know,
I was just, sometimes you, you haven't bought
a toy in a while and you get a little itchy and
you're like, ah, I need to, I need to spend this
money. It's building up. I gotta get rid of it.
I kind of buy a toy and, uh, I couldn't find
anything that I didn't have. And then they, there's
just this Ross I know has this stupid super knockoff,
cheap, cheap, cheap. transformer -like toy, converter
type toy. And it's cool and all, but I'm like,
even it was eight bucks for this, you know, almost
12 inch big transforming jet. And I'm like, what
am I going to do with this stupid thing? It doesn't
fit anywhere in here. I need to, ugh, I probably
shouldn't have got it. But, uh, but I also, I
don't really sell toys. I don't, yeah, I haven't
gotten really good at that yet. Um, I just, I
just hoard them. I just keep buying them. I don't
really know how to get rid of any cause I don't
want to get rid of any. Yeah. So for context
folks, this, this guy sends me his, his room
tour that he did on YouTube and I'm watching
this and I'm like, I don't know what he has more
of toys or wood paneling in his apartment. That's
why it needed covered up with toys. It's hideous
wall wood paneling crap. Oh man. I haven't seen
wood paneling since I lived in Massachusetts.
Uh -huh. That's crazy. It was good times. Uh
-huh. Oh boy. How large or small is your toy
collection? Do your toys take up the whole house
or are they relegated to one room shelf or something
like that? Answer, whole house. I just live in
a small apartment, but it is the first time in
my life I've ever had 100 % of my toys out on
display and I can't even begin to tell you just
for my soul how good it feels to be surrounded.
Every room is, I only have like three rooms,
but they're all completely full floor to ceiling.
every inch of the walls pretty much full. I did
a quick look earlier just in case you asked,
and I guess I have 265 pops, so I got a ways
to go to catch ya, but I made myself a very specific
rule with that is I only Collected horror movie
pops because I'm a big horror movie guy Horror
movie filmmaker and all this stuff, but so I
only just wanted to and and thankfully I made
that rule early so because there's a only a bazillion
pops so although I have 265 horror movie pops,
so that's Good, but and then I looked and I have
been cataloging my collection. There's this awesome
Because I'm an Android person, I think there's
a fairly cool app for Apple people out there.
But for Android, I couldn't find anything that
was worth crap. So I found this website called
Schmax. And they do S -H -M -A -X. And they do
all toys. All toys. Which is great, but I just
use it for my transformers and I've been since
I moved in here and started putting them up I've
been cataloging them all and I just went over
1400 transformers. Wow. You're right. I need
more. You're right. I could use some more. So
it's funny. I'm a part of a Instagram private
chat thing through a patreon program through
slap shot pops on YouTube cool and One of the
guys in there Actually, he was to episode. He
was episode one. No, he's three episodes ago.
He's 176. Oh, yeah. Yeah his Funko fat guy his
his big thing is Every time I show, like, my
display or whatever else and he sees the white
walls that don't have any of the artwork that
I have to hang up yet hung up, he's like, there's
so much wall there. There needs to be Funko Pops
there, but no, it doesn't. No, no, no. Bill it
up. No, no. Curate. Curate the collection. Make
it manageable. Make it what you want it to be.
Don't let it overtake you. Again, going back
to the whole AI comment. Actual intelligence,
not artificial. You're probably right. Well,
you know. Live long and prosper. So it's funny.
See, this is why I don't show people the questions
beforehand. Question 18, how do you keep track
of your collection? You just answered that. Yeah,
so that's okay. Schmax. Schmax .com .ca .insert
whatever net here. I don't know. I like it. It's
free and it's pretty good. That's cool. That's
cool. How do you like say you have all your toys
and you have all your funko pops which technically
are toys I know but still how do you display
all of these things? Like do you have a specific
display language that you're trying to convey?
I do and if you watch my toy room tour video
you can see it, but I definitely when I first
moved into this place my first two weeks I didn't
have internet so I had all this time to figure
it all out and I have my main room in here with
the computer and the bed is kind of I have it
all loose like most of my loose toys are in this
room and I really had a good time separating
them all by toyed lines so by years basically.
So each shelf or each section is, oh it's just
so great to be able to just have the whole line,
the whole line in a line so you can see it and
see what you need to pick up, what's missing,
you know, just seeing them all together. And
then I have Kind of the living room is where
all the on card and in box stuff is. Um, and,
and I love, I love both rooms for different reasons.
I like that the living room's neat with all the,
cause every inch of the wall is, is a card with
a bubble on it basically. And it's so fun. I
just love it. Cause when you, when I walk in,
it gives me that feeling of walking into a toy
store again. You know, I sorta can, you know,
squint and fool myself that I can get those feelings
again of walking into a toy store. And so when
I set it all up, I just, I was only worried about
getting the Transformers out, trying to get a
hundred percent of them out. And then I was like,
okay, I'm done. Oh crap. I have all this horror
movie stuff and I just have a kitchen left. I'm
like, all right, I guess it's all going in here.
It's a little weird. you know, to have a wall
of pops, two walls of pops in your kitchen where
your stove is. And so it's weird, but, um, and
then it was quickly, um, named hell's kitchen
just cause it's all horror movie stuff. And,
and, um, so it's, it's, it's neat. It's very
comforting to, uh, with the OCD brain, uh, just
to have things separated and in order and in
sections and Neat and orderly. I definitely prefer
that. I mean, I think we all have sections on
the floor where I'm going to get to that pile
of boxes soon, but for the most part, I definitely
enjoy displaying these toys in a museum -ish
kind of way. I've even started doing that. I'll
post when I'm home for a weekend or something,
I'll be like... Jason's Toy Museum is open from
six to eight p .m. and then you know message
me for my address and then people will come over
and and I'll just give them tours and it's just
so fun to like because it's it's overload when
you come in here it's it just their faces when
they walk in like I can tell you all day that
I have a lot of toys in here but till you see
them In person you're just like you can't imagine
and that's that's really fun to just getting
to share it all with with people and Yeah Very
cool. Very cool. Yeah, that's always the interesting
thing Like, you know you you walk into somebody's
house and you see how they have the stuff Displayed
and some people have toys starting at the door.
Some people don't yeah, I don't I am also in
a one -bedroom and the living room is pretty
much, because I have a living room, dining room,
combo, it's one big open space, so you saw it
in the video I sent you on Twitter, but yeah,
no, I am all mostly in the living room and I
don't even think this is, I know this is a majority
of my collection, but I don't even think it's
all of it because there are several where I'm
looking, I was looking through to, I'm like...
Where'd that go? Because it ain't here. I know
I didn't sell it. I wouldn't sell that one. So,
heaven forbid, but everybody is safe, but the
apartment building is burning down. What is the
one toy? You can only keep one toy from your
entire collection. What would it be and why?
What would you run in to save from the fire?
Well, quickly scan around. Boy, where to start?
What's the one? I think. I think I have to do
it. I think I have to choose. So, you know, one
of the first questions was supportive parents
and stuff. And thankfully, Mom and Dad were,
you know, at least not against it and definitely
was supporting it. And I remember, I don't remember
what year it was exactly, but I feel like we
were older. But one of our Christmases, my mom
got Spudy and I both the... The Optimus MP01.
Okay. And, uh, and, and we lost mom a few years
ago. So it's extra special now. And, and it's
just such a monstrous, amazing, just the amazing
toy. And, and then it's extra special because
it was just, I feel like definitely we were growing
up. So it was weird to just suddenly get. This
toy from mom, but you know, she knew how much
we loved it So that's that's probably the one
I'd have to get not a Starscream. It's weird
to say that but I Mean, you know, she didn't
get you the Starscream coronation masterpiece
set because they have that too, you know Yeah.
Oh lord. Yeah. No, that's uh, that's awesome.
That's very cool Yeah, I was always back when
I was actually collecting toys not just funko
pops I always wanted the MP04 because he came
with the trailer. Yeah, I know. Same toy as the
MP01, except the MP04 came with the trailer.
I'm like, oh, OK, well, I never got it. And it's
fine. I'm perfectly fine not having it. All right,
folks, that's the halfway point. We're going
to take a quick ad break. You're going to hear
some ads and some other stuff. And we'll come
back to continue on with the questions with Jason
right after this. Hello Geeks and Geekettes!

All right, we are back here on Toycast. This
is episode 179 with Jason from Cracktastic Plastic,
one of the only toy podcasts anyone really needs
to be listening to. That's right. That's right.
I said one of, not the. Right, of course. There's
so many toy podcasts out there, but we all do
so many damn different things and it's so interesting.
All things Transformers, that's the other one.
That's the one that turned me on to you guys
in the show. Well, there you go. That's that's
good Transformers in the title. I have to listen.
Hey exactly for years Awesome. Awesome. Thank
you so much. We appreciate it. So on the flip
side of the oh my god your place of Toys is burning
down here's the toy box challenge you get one
and i assume this is inches i don't know i don't
deal with measurements but you get one 18 by
18 by 18 box the only toys you can keep have
to fit in the box what can you put in there he's
measuring folks i heard the measuring tape oh
my god oh that's okay well um you know what i
would do Oh, and then I saw the G1s over there.
Shoot. I think my answer is going to be, I'm
going to try and fit all of my alternators into
this box, because I feel like we all have a break
sometimes, you know, in the middle of our lives
when we find girls or high school and all that
stuff. And I feel that's fairly normal. And when
alternators came out, that was right. When I
was that that turned me that that first smoke
screen Had just got me back into transformers
a hundred percent and I haven't stopped since
and I recently Just completed my alternators
line and it's I mean, it's sad. It's satisfying
It's sad. I can't go by I mean, I can't really
buy anymore because I have them all now but I
know I love them so much and they're just such
amazing toys and so complicated, so big, so weird.
I just love them. They mean so much to me and,
and, uh, I'd try to fit all them into this box.
There you go. That's very cool. Very cool. Are
you a Funko fan? Am I? Let me tell you something.
I got 265. Yeah, I do. I, I find myself since
for years defending them little Vinyl things
and I don't know some people get awfully butthurt
about Pops and being toys, but I love them and
they're cool and Yeah, I've collected the heck
out of them I Catalog them with the app that
app is amazing. I don't it really helps Yeah,
keep track of things. I love it. I wished I wish
the Transformers head I wish all toys had a their
own app that was as cool as that Funko app, but
Yeah, and I mean when then once we started this
podcast I've my focus is definitely Went away
from horror a little bit and just I just laser
focused on these Transforming robots. I just
can't stop it. But yep, but then you know I get
transformer pops too. So I go best of both worlds
Yeah, big fan big fan. I found a an old picture
which eventually I need to take a new picture
of the current one but found a very very old
picture from 2009 era of Mighty Mugs Starscream
back in the day heck yeah and he has in this
picture there was a Marvel so Marvel did Wolverine
and a couple other variants of Wolverine and
one of them they did Logan So it's Logan with
his jeans and his wife beater and his claws out
and he's got a cowboy hat on So what I did years
and years and years ago was like Logan He's not
cool enough for this cowboy hat. No. I put the
cowboy hat on Starscream, and I wish I still
had the cowboy hat on Starscream to replicate
the effect in order to take the Funko Pop Starscream
out of the box and put them side by side, but
I don't have those anymore. I have the pop. I
don't have the Mighty Mugs anymore, but I saw
that image. What an image. Yeah, I saw that image
just as I was going to send that to you. I'm
like, look, this is how fat Mighty... This is
how fat Funko Pops used to be. You'd be like,
that's not a Funko Pop. I'm like, no, you're
right, it's not. I got most of those too. I got
my Starscreams in a box and yeah, I like them.
I think the Mighty Mugs are awesome. Cute. So
cute. Yep. They were the original Funko Pop before
Funko Pop was a thing. What was the most money
you spent on a toy? Let's I would Fortress Maximus
from Titans return probably whatever he was when
he came out I just I mean, I remember it playing
his day. It was a Toys R Us I 1 million percent
did not expect to see him there and I you know
Go down that toy aisle and he's on the bottom
shelf and I'm just like well buck Now I have
to buy him. I can't leave this store Without
him. I must find a way to make sure I leave with
this guy and I just said I'm so glad I did it
was the best, you know three hours putting on
stickers I ever had my life and Yeah, I think
I think he's probably the most expensive I recently
got The Guardian robot Titan and he was 200.
That's They're all 200 now and that's more than
I want to spend, but yeah, I'd say, yeah, no
more than 200 on average, but yeah, that Fort
Max though, whatever he was, I think 350, but
I can't remember, but definitely it was the most
I ever spent. So there's only $150 more than
the original generation one version. Oh my goodness.
Anyone wants to trade me, I'll do it. You can
get your money. It's worth it. That's right.
So on the flip side, what is the cheapest toy
you bought or what was the best deal you ever
got for a figure that may have been worth quite
a bit more than you paid? Oh man. So I'm originally
from this really, really small town called what?
Cheer? What cheer? And here in Iowa and in the
Midwest. This town in this state in the Midwest
is very well known for having one of the largest
flea markets here in the Midwest. I mean just
so many miles of people out in the sun anyway,
so I love going to this thing and it's you know
digging through tubs and and people it's it's
a lot of people not knowing what they got is
is the thrill of the hunt, you know trying to
find that thing and Sure enough. I mean every
year they do it like three times a year and I
try to go as often as I can It's not you know,
everyone thinks they have gold now. So things
are harder than it used to be but um definitely
a few years ago one of them amazing for me it
was amazing it wasn't a super great toy ever
but it was a uh the thing that you hope happens
is they have this thing that they don't know
what they have and so for 25 cents i got an original
g1 spinister and and to them they just sold a
little toy helicopter but i'm like and he was
in great shape and he's perfect and i'm like
I guess, will you take 15 cents for it? No, I
didn't say that, but I was like, I couldn't throw
that quarter at them fast enough. So yeah, I
mean, that's always the fun of going to garage
sales, yard sales, and all these toy shows. And
just that thrill of the hunt, man, just trying
to find that bargain, that thing that you don't
think you're ever going to find and maybe get
a good deal on it. Love it. Yeah, I'm too old
to be hunting anything anymore. I just want what
I want and if I can afford it, I'll afford it.
That's like, I just... Oh no, you're lucky to
know what you want. That's a good thing. Well,
and again, you have to worry about, you know...
And yeah, you do have to find it online or whatever
else. Most every website now has Funko pop. So
it doesn't, unless it's an exclusive to somewhere
or whatever, which is fine. You can find those
too, but like this whole hunting thing, I'm just
like, uh, I'm too old. It's like that joke that
came out in 2015 when that seventh star Wars,
the forest awakens the forest needs a nap. It
was a, it was a, it was a Maggie Simpson joke
at the time because they had the, they had the
Disney plus special at the same time when that
was out. But yeah, no, man, I am, I'm so over
the hunt. Like I, I can't deal with the stress
of hunting for toys anymore. I, you know, more
power to the people that, that, that, that love
that kind of stuff. I just can't. All right,
we're also here in Iowa. Uh, there's a show called
American Pickers. That's, that's where they're
from and, and it got really popular on the history.
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. So like, I don't know. It just,
maybe there's just something in the water out
here in the Midwest that just makes digging through
junk really fun. I don't know. I don't know.
Well, when you got junk on TV, I mean, you know.
Yep. You talk TV I talk some TV now the American
pickers and I don't touch that dial Didn't that
show get canceled Oh, I don't know. I think it's
Last I heard something happened between Mike
and Frank and I went there. I heard that I don't
think I Don't think Frank's on the show anymore.
I think it's just brother now. So Okay I feel
like I'm repeating myself because I feel like
we've already talked about this, but what modern
and or vintage toy lines are you currently collecting?
Answer. All of them. Um, I, uh, sadly that's
true, but also like I'm having a lot of fun now
that I can see all my toys out in one place.
I'm having fun, like trying to complete lines.
I started, I recently like, I'm like 1984, the
first year. I'm going to get them 27 whatever
toys. And I'm like, so I did that. Yay. Check
it off. All right. Let's move to 1985. All right.
I got that one. Now I'm working on 80s. You know,
it's just going to take a while, but so I'm having
fun little games, you know, in your head, collecting
you just, you know, it's easy to put those remainder
ones on a list of things you're looking for when
you're out toy hunting. And, um, so, but then,
like I said, I love the new toys too. I can't.
I can't stop buying them either. I don't have
a connection to it. I try to have an excuse not
to do it. I don't really try to do the movie
toys. They just come out again with the video
game ones. I'm like, I didn't play the video
game, so I don't really have an attachment. I
think they're cool looking, but it's an excuse
to maybe not buy a couple. Yeah, I didn't even
have the, I didn't even play the games. I've
seen people play the games, but I've never played
the games, but I've, like I said, and I had the
original Optimus and Bumblebee from way back
when, from back in 2010 when they did those.
And I'm looking at these new ones and I'm like,
that Bumblebee color on the original toy was
better than this new one, I think. I don't know.
It was more, it was more. gold in the original
toy, and this one is more yellow, not mustard.
It's more Grey Poupon than anything else. The
Autobots have all the ketchup and mustard they
need between Bubble Bee and Cliffjumper. And
then I guess you could throw some relish in there
with Hound or mayonnaise with Prowl. You're making
me hungry. Wait, wait, wait. It's just condiments.
How can you be hungry for condiments? Oh, you're
right. Who's the hot dog in this? I don't know.
Starscream. That's a Freudian thing I don't want
to think about right now. Thank you. Yes, no.
No, please. No toners in this podcast. Thank
you. See, I listened. I know what I'm talking
about. There you go. Do you visit toy shows or
conventions? When you visit toy shows or conventions,
do you have a typical methodology? Do you bring
a certain amount of money for what you're looking
for, et cetera, et cetera? I love toy shows.
I go to them as often as I can. Seriously, when
we... When we go on tour with the band, we really
do book tours around local toy stores and shows.
And every, when we're going from one town to
the next on tour, we're like, what's happening
in between? Do we got time to stop? And we're
always going to shows and we love going to toy
shows. So I mean, cause they put all the toys
into one room. Like how do you not like that?
But we love toy shows so much that we even started
our own here in our hometown called Cracktastic
Plastic Con. And really it's just an excuse for
everyone to bring the toys to us for once instead
of us having to go running around looking for
toys. And we've done like seven of them shows
and they're great and it keeps growing and it's
just nice creating a little toy community in
our town here in this place called Iowa. Yeah,
I love toy shows. It feels like on driving to
the toy show, we all kind of talk about what
we're looking for and it never really matters
because we hardly ever find what we're actually
looking for. But we always find stuff we want
and that's half the fun. You can bring as much
money as you want. Even on our last tour that
we did, you know, you bring, you're like, I got
the budget set here. And so my brother's booty,
uh, he ended up blowing what he brought in the
first three days. And he's like day four, he's
like on the phone with his bank. He's like, can
you send me some more money? I got six days of
tour left. I need toy money. So he had to do
it. It was like, so it doesn't even matter. You
could just get more money. Because we're in Ohio,
man. It's the the Mecca of toys. It's unbelievable
that state. So we love touring Ohio for the toys
Yeah, I love toy shows What do you think it is
about our generation that causes our childhood
toys to mean so much more to us than say for
instance our parents generation That's a great
question All I can think I feel like our generation,
we had cartoons that went along with our toys.
We had that fiction, you know, that I think that
really helps cement these characters in our brain.
Yeah, we all liked our toys, our Cobra Commanders
and Skeletors, but like they had personality
because we watched them on the cartoons. We would
have never... come up with Skeletor's laugh on
our own, you know, so. And which makes me kind
of worry about, I mean, I guess there's still
cartoons of toy lines out, but not as, not like
it was. So I worry a little about the next generation,
but I don't know. I think that helped just tie
it in for us growing up. I don't know. What do
you think on that one? That one's a deep one.
The difference is, and I know people are gonna
say, oh, but our parents had, yes, our parents
had toys, but you're talking about 50s, 60s,
and 70s toys before the toy boom really, like
the toy boom really didn't start before 1981.
I mean, yes, there were Barbie dolls. Yes, there
were Hot Wheels toys. There were tons of awesome
toys back then. There were, but half of them
were like, you might as well go play in the dirt.
I'm gonna go play in the dirt now with my, with
my Barbies and my... my, my, my... 12 inch G
.I. Joes? Yeah, my male dolls that go with the
female dolls. Yeah, it's, yeah, it definitely
was the quintessentialness of the 80s to have
that fiction to go along with the product because
that way we could... Live out well except for
two transformers only two transformers characters.
They got the shaft in the 80s Well for for iron
hide and ratchet. Oh, they ain't got no heads
Took forever to figure those two out Get over
that and like I was yeah, I had iron hide and
I'm like wait. Where's his head? Is it in the
box? Did I leave it in the what what like mom?
What's a diaclone? That clone is making me die
over here. What is your motivation for purchasing
soys to display, play, fiddle, describe your
collecting style? Are you a completionist, storyteller,
cherry picker, or otherwise? Um, maybe I don't
want to admit completionist. Cause it's like,
it's not, I mean, spooky jokes when we're like,
Hey, what do you want? He says all of the toys
and he has no other answer. And I believe him
and I don't feel like it's that, but yet I feel
very compelled. I don't know. Once you start
getting this many, you're like, it's just the
thing you do. And, uh, Yeah, I mean, definitely
love displaying them. I love to play with them.
I love the puzzles. There's always desk bots.
There's always something to fiddle with. So for
all the reasons, after doing this, starting our
podcast, just photography has been an amazing
reason to have all these toys. I know Elgin will
just be like, I don't even buy this line, but
man, this would go really good with this guy
in a picture someday. And I'm like, that's a
reason to buy a toy. Okay. All right. Yeah. So
I just, I want them all. That's why I need them
all. Pokemon said, please. No, no, no, no, no,
no. Gotta catch them. You don't gotta catch them
all. Are you sure? I can just, I can just see
the headline now. Apartment complex in Iowa,
somewhere in Iowa, just falls to the cement under
the weight of all these toys in this guy's apartment.
And his dying words were, well, it's a good way
to go. Yeah, exactly. It's like, uh, it's like
our good friend. Yep. So it's like our good,
good friend combo guy always used to say life
well spent. Exactly. Have you ever purchased
a toy for a child with the ulterior motive for
playing with it yourself? That's a definitely
yes. Um, I've been a stepdad a few times, so
it's, you always want to encourage and are like
my best friend. He's got kids. So he knows every
Christmas he's getting two transformers from
uncle Jason. Like it's just for 15 years now.
And then like, well, I buy, I can, I get to buy
him the kid toy that I wouldn't probably normally
buy myself so that I can still get to play with
it without having to have it. So I definitely
do. Well, you want to spread the love, you know,
like I know how much I like these toys. I want
to encourage. Meanwhile, I'm over there in the
corner of the electronics department of Walmart,
whispering under my breath, get away from my
Funko Pops, you kid. Get away from my Funko Pops,
you kid. That's a story I have. It's mine. The
sad thing is that day, I remember this. I'm telling
a different part of the story because I've told
the story all the time. It's just a little simple
story. All I wanted was Cobra. No, Cobra Commander
was GameStop. All I wanted was Walmart. All I
wanted was the Walmart -exclusive Baroness, Funko
Pop. One pop. Out of the entire time that I was
living out in Washington, I saw my Walmart maybe
out of two and a half, three years, I saw my
Walmart maybe restock with good stuff like twice.
for pops. And I was in there, I was like, holy
crap, that's Baroness. I don't care that she
has a Walmart sticker on her, but that's Baroness.
There you go. Have you ever purchased a vintage
toy for a child because you thought it would
be fun based on your own preferences? Oh, gosh,
that's probably a no, because mostly just for,
well. Mean one I need it and then I get it before
you get it if it's vintage and then you know,
they're more fragile and and kids yeah, and sometimes
kids do come over to my toy museum and But I
just have a little box of like McDonald's toys
for them to play with if they want to if they
have to touch a toy I don't think I could oh
I don't give me nightmares just thinking of a
kid playing with a vintage toy. Oh He's, they're
going to break it. I can't handle it. But Jason,
man, die cast construction. It's a lost art.
Right. I know you're right. They, these lasted
through us smashing them around, I guess, but
oh man, that's hard to, hard to imagine. Absolutely.
Do you do any toy modifications or customs, painting,
building, building dioramas, etc.? Oh man, I
really, this is on my list of two do's. I really
wished I did. I want to so bad. A few of our
friends do and I love my Twitter feed is just
full of people customizing stuff and I love watching
the videos. I love it. I just don't. Haven't
just got the time to do it. I even I've been
packing around I got a couple Run that first
wave of the Beast Wars reissues. I got a Cheetor
and a rat trap I think you know cuz they went
to clearance for like two dollars or whatever
and I'm like I've been carrying around an extra
two of those Because I wanted to like paint them.
I wanted to make like like a nemesis cheetor
and rat trap it just what I told myself, I still
haven't bought the paint. I don't have the time
to do it. I want to though. I love, I love it.
I think it'd be really fun. I just haven't yet.
I love, I love toy hack stickers. I love sticker
and up stuff. That's one of my favorite things
to do, but as far as sort of customizing, but
not really. Do you think toy companies should
specifically have adult collective toys, child
toys, or find a way to mix both? Hmm. I mean
over here in transformer land. There's usually
at least a toy line and a kid line and I suppose
Masterpiece is the adult line. So but I yeah,
I mean I I Even started back in cyber verse.
I'm like, you know what? I freaking love this
cartoon so much. It's probably my second favorite
cartoon. I'm like I want these toys too. Sure
they're cheap sure they're hollow but they're
these characters that i love in this cartoon
that i love that's that connection to the to
the fiction and i'm and so i bought the shit
out of them cyberverse toys and now i'm doing
it with earth spark earth spark's fucking amazing
and and i'm loving these toys i'm doing my first
build a figure i'm so excited because i'm all
in on this earth spark Well, I don't know. So
I like them all, you know, imagination knows
no articulation. So give me them all. But, um,
I mean, I'm glad. Yeah. Start them young. So
yes, definitely have kid lines. Yeah. I don't
mind. Like, yeah, you need to. catered to everybody
but it's and I said this recently in a couple
episodes so folks if you're hearing the sound
of my voice and you've heard this before you
can fast -forward no they don't love it they
don't love it when I repeat repeat repeat myself
I feel like I'm kickback over here or shrapnel
or whatever whichever one put the energon energon
energon just shut up Uh, but what, uh, uh, the,
uh, oh, that's so, yeah, it's so funny to me
seeing like the transformers official Instagram
page go through their stories and they're like,
parents swipe up now to buy your kids, uh, whatever,
what, um, uh, uh, the, the Tarn. That's what
it is. Like no child should have Tarn. You're
probably right. Just in the context of the fact
that. of what the character is, no child should
have Tarn. Yeah, but imagine being a kid. You
want that thing that you're not supposed to have.
You want that naughty thing and Tarn represents
that. Ain't that the truth? Yeah. Do you have
a, my parents got rid of my toys story? No, but
sort of. And by parents, I mean that asshole
spooty brother of mine. So I don't, I mean, we
were toy, we broke a lot of our toys. They never,
a lot of them didn't make it, but there, there
was probably a box that made it through. And
you know, like I said, we have that part in our
lives where we stopped for a minute. And when
I think we both kind of came back at the same
time, me and my brother, but that jerk face got
to that box before me. And somehow because of
dibs rules, He, I mean, I'm still, I'm very hurt
about it. Like he had my, my G1 shockwave that
I know was mine, but he got to that box before
me and just loves to just talk about his shockwave
anyway. So no, I didn't, I don't think anyone,
yeah, that horrible threw them away or garage
sale. Thankfully. no traumatizing story like
that, but I did lose them to my brother. At least
I could still visit them. You know, there aren't
a lot of them, but I could still at least visit
them. That's something I guess. Or, you know,
you could just find a way to distract him and
just steal it back from him. That's true. He's,
he's got quite a few too. So I'm sure if I just
shuffled his shells around a little, he wouldn't
even notice. Nah. Once you have over 1 ,400 of
these things, you don't notice shit anymore.
That's not true. Tell you every name of every
one of these damn things. Absolutely. Do you
find you are coming to an end of your active
collecting? If so, what has signified this phase
for you? Was there ever a moment when you were
done with toys? Have you ever considered stopping
as a collector or even selling your whole collection?
100 % zero. No. I mean, yeah. So yeah, when we
were teenagers, you know, that part we stopped,
but I came back and there's, I think about it
often. I mean, the thing I've been thinking about
recently is that when I die, I'm going to be
a burden on somebody just straight up. I'm going
to be a burden on somebody. But yeah, no, I mean,
When people ask her when you're 80 are you still
gonna? Yes, I'm gonna be playing with toys I
had can't I can't see stopping ever. I just you
know, it's such a part of me I love it so much.
It brings me so much joy Why would I ever want
to stop I? Kidding no hard time is hard enough
to try to sell these things. I don't know. I
can't imagine I'm all in man I have a, I have
a tattooed sleeve of transform. I mean, it's
in my blood. I got a love. There you go. There
you go. Yeah. It's so funny folks. A little bit
beside behind the scenes here. You're probably
hearing this episode a few weeks after we recorded
it, but I just finished. Recording and releasing
with Jason a different Jason Jason swabota from
seven bucks a pop and I asked him that I asked
everybody I asked everybody all the same questions
the questions don't change the stories do so
I asked him and he goes. Whenever I depart this
mortal coil, it'll be somebody else's problem.
I don't care I'm like, all right. Well, that's
the that's the best answer. I've gotten for that
question ever No, he's not wrong I mean, you
know here at all. That's right. There's gonna
be one in Because I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna
see this year, but in 2099 There's going to be
one person left inhumanity that is just surrounded
by a landfill of plastic. And it's going to be
the plastic from the last 200 years of us contributing
to it. Because once we're gone, unless you're
donating them to other kids or other good wills
or other whatever, like, who the hell knows?
They're just going to end up in the trash anyway.
I know. I mean, I can be hopeful that somebody
else will get to enjoy them, but yeah. Absolutely.
What is something that does not have a toy of
it that you'd love to have in toy form? Well,
uh, man, it's all transformer talk. Um, so I
love this crossover series. It's been just the
joy to, uh, the things we thought about as kids,
like, wouldn't it be awesome if GI Joe and transformers
could, I mean, they're, they're, they're toy,
they're vehicles. Why can't. Yeah, so and they've
started doing that so awesome. I have I think
all of the Crossover series I just find them
so neat, but there are definitely some that are
missing obvious for me I don't know why I go
to air wolf first, but I used to love that show
so much Kit from Knight Rider obvious Missing
needs to happen while we got Feeny still around
Or and then like greatest American hero. Those
are the top three Like needs to be up next for
the crossover series. Those are toys that need
to happen And you would think with like the G
however many GI Joe helicopters there are yeah
You you would think that they would have made
some sort of air wolf something repaint or something
the same thing with kit however many you know,
like you you and even if you create a new cat
like They took a care. They took a car and made
a character out of. They took the DeLorean and
made gigawatt like, like it's not even like combined
like Megatron, his tank Megatron, his tank is
obvious because that's, you know, it's Megatron
and it's a in his tank. That's obvious. But like
in order to make kit a transformer, you have
to make him his own character. Like you have
to black sports car. we have those just paint
something black and call it kid already. Yeah.
So I'm enjoying those crossovers and that's definitely
keeps my brain thinking about fun things that
could be someday. I'm just glad the crossovers
have gotten better over the years. Oh, yeah.
Because I remember the original Transformers
Star Wars crap. I hated that Millennium Falcon
more than any other toy in my entire I'm like,
why the hell would you make a transformer out
of the Millennium? That's I'm sure they could
do it now and get away with it. It would be fine.
It would be awesome. But back then that one from
those days, like, but it was hot and chewy. So
it's perfect, right? Darth Vader is the Death
Star. Perfect. So, I mean, yeah, so it's cool,
but yeah, I don't know if they were really that
good at toys. That's my point is that they weren't
that great. I love the concept of making it,
you know, but. Oh my god that that that because
it kind of gave them human ish faces. It's really
uh -huh The transformations are crazy. Oh Boy,
what is a toy that you'd love to have scaled
up and functional for the real world? Oh my well
The arc yeah, let's go cruising through space
That'd be fun, right? Cruising through space
waiting for the nemesis to just deploy its its
boarding chutes. Uh -huh. Yeah, we're getting
one. Yeah, we're Yeah, I think I don't know I
think everything I'm looking at already pretty
much exists in a real way That's one of them
that doesn't and number 37 in a row. That's what
she said How have your spouses and or significant
others, mates, partners, et cetera, et cetera,
dealt with your collection? Oh, well, I've I've
had some that have really not liked it. And I
I'm so lucky. I mean, so lucky with my current
girlfriend, Michelle. She's amazing. And it's
oh, man, there there isn't fear. Like there is
when you're inviting the girl over for the first
time. And you're like, okay, well, this is, we're
going to know real soon if she's the one or we
can keep going. But, um, no, she, uh, she, uh,
she's super supportive. So lucky. She, um, really
loves coming over and looking and playing with
the toys and, and, uh, just loves that I love
something so passionately and supports it. Super,
super lucky there. I know we don't always get
that, but I'm definitely lucky. Yeah, absolutely,
absolutely. Toy collecting can have its struggles.
What is one aspect you tend to struggle with
the most? Well, I'd say the coming up with the
money for the dang things. They're not free anymore.
Nope. No, yeah, I mean, I tell myself that they've
always been getting more and more expensive since
they were ever. So like, it's just part of being
alive and buying things as they cost more tomorrow
than they did yesterday, all things. So it's
like, why, why complain now when it's always
been that way? But yeah, the real struggles is
what do I do with these boxes? Come on, man.
I have so many boxes. Money and space are the
two biggest, you know, that's always the deal
with that. Yeah. Yeah. I need to actually go
through. So I, I feel weird having like holiday
pops out when it's not a holiday. So I will cycle
those. So right now, uh, my Ebenezer Scrooge
Funko Pop Batman with Jack Frost Joker. are both
in in the closet all of my home alone pops all
of the christmas vacation pops save two are are
all in there and now because i came across these
recently in the last couple of months and i haven't
had a chance to clean out the closet to make
them fit in there for the season but i have the
uh... the two pop holiday moments finally i finally
was able to get those the christmas vacation
house in the home alone house so Those are sitting
behind me with a bunch of other things stacked
on top of them. But yeah, space is always, and
that's my thing with spaces, that's why I'm curating
my collection. I will not, like, I can't let
my collection get over 500. If I let it get over
500, I just can't. Just can't do it. What is
one positive and or one negative memory you have
with buying toys? Well, it's the highs and lows
of the thrill of the hunt. This last tour that
my band went on, my band's called Xray Mary,
xraymary .com, this last tour we went on had
just the greatest moment ever, and I'll do that
second. the, the, the bad story, uh, really isn't
that bad, but it's something that happens. And
like at the beginning of tour, like I had a list,
I knew what I needed and I came across it fairly
early. I mean, this tour is going so well that
like halfway through we're going to Walmart to
buy more totes, you know, just cause we got to
put toys in more totes. And, uh, so I don't get
to see these toys or look at them or for a while
and I forgot what I'd bought. And last day of
tour, bought the gosh dang same toy again. Oh
no. And I'm still hanging it. I've tried to sell
it. I haven't been able to get rid of it yet,
but it's not a big deal, but it's like, gosh
darn it. That was. What toy is it? Um, I think
it was war for Cybertron wheel jack. Oh, nothing
crazy, but no hound. It was no. One of those
War of Cybertron guys. Yeah, he's in a tote now
somewhere. But not a big deal, but I was like,
gosh darn it. The tour was going so great. And
I'm like, ah, that was 20 bucks. I could have
spent on something else. That's why it's a bad
memory. Yep. But we went on this little trip
to these toy stores and like, They just from
the minute, like Elgin, this was right when the
Castle Grayskull was out. And he's just, I mean,
the He -Man folks are so lucky right now. I mean,
there's so many good He -Man Motu toys out. It's
just, it's not even fair how awesome these toys
are and how many and plentiful they are. It's
amazing. I'm just jealous, but you guys are having
it so good right now. It's awesome. And so the
Castle Grayskull came out and even our Walmart
in town had a little price tag placeholder and
Al's just like, great, now I have to go every
day until, you know, because that placeholder
is there. Never did come by the way, but we're
on tour. We're out of town. We know this is the
biggest toy he's probably ever bought and would
be. You know, it just becomes the, like, focus
at every toy store, every shop we go to. It's
like, do they have Grayskull? No. Grayskull?
No. Grayskull? No. It never happens and just...
And it doesn't happen. And it's kind of sad.
I mean, some part of you is like, well... That's
a hundred bucks. I don't have to lose now. But,
uh, so, but we're like, oh, it is kind of sad,
you know, and it's dark and we're heading home
and we're like, you know what? One more store,
one more Walmart. I know it's late guys. I know
we're tired. I know we just want to get home
and go to sleep, but just, just one more. Okay.
All right. We'll do it. So we go in, we, we all,
you know, make our beeline like we do. Spoodie
goes and grabs a cart. I always end up running
sometimes. I get so excited. I get to the toy
section, but we all kind of arrive there at the
same time. And since we all do different lines,
they're not all in the same places, but we, you
know, we're looking through this big toy aisle
in this Walmart or Target, whichever it was.
Then we were just frothing, we finding toys we
hadn't found. Still no gray skull. But with the
rest of us are like, oh yeah, we got, oh, there's
this, this is cool. And then we're like, oh,
we lost track of Elgin. Where's Elgin? Where'd
he go? And we looking at each other and then
from the next aisle over, we hear a grown man
yelp like no other grown man. has ever made this
noise before in public. But he lets out a hoot
and a holler and is just, I'll just never forget
it. And we look and the end of the aisle, he
comes running around the aisle with this castle
grayskull over his head. Just the biggest beam
of smile you've ever seen in your life. And we
happened to snap a picture of it too, of the
moment when he came around this corner of this
aisle and it was just the perfect Climax to this
toy hunt. It could not have been storyboarded
any better It was just so amazing and it was
incredible and and then it turned out the toys
amazing and oh man. It was such a It worked out
the way it was supposed to. It was amazing. That's
so cool. That is so awesome. Yeah. Yeah, there
is nothing like finding what you've been searching
for after going to four different stores and
striking out. Absolutely. Yeah. You know, the
whole hunt thing though, it's like, Can I just
click on a website? No, I know I know and I understand
that but like when you were describing his scream
I'm like, so basically he turned into bulkhead
from Transformers Prime and scream like a little
girl Like I actually had that audio and I'm like,
oh man. It's so nice to be able to use this Is
you just screaming a girl? No That's hilarious
Did you just scream like a little girl? No. Maybe.
If you could create any toy, what would you want
to create? So basically Hasbro gives you the
keys to the kingdom, no budget, no, the sky's
the limit. What would you do? Well, I was asked
this question early when we started our podcast
and my answer was the Ark. And then they freaking
made it. So I'm so happy. But so I was thinking
about it and like. I just can't let go of another
old TV show that I don't know if anyone else
knows about called Manimal. I've heard of it,
but I don't remember it. It's basically like,
yeah, this special private eye that, or that
like something, I can't remember, voodooy thing
happened. And so he could turn into animals like
a black panther or a hawk. or a snake to help
solve crimes. I know, pretty awesome, right?
And so, I mean, I'm not even a big Beast Wars
guy, but man, I don't know, just another crossover,
another, obviously would never happen, but man,
just to get more manimal love in the world, that's
my stupid pick. There you go. Very cool, very
cool. What is the one piece of advice you would
give the toy collecting fandom in general? Well,
I think it's the same advice most of us would
give that our calm, rational people would give.
And the more I get into this fandom, it's like,
come on guys, this end of the day, it's just
toys, you know? uh we get them to make us feel
good and and for fun and if you let yourself
get all mad then what are you doing man so obviously
the advice is to just calm down and remember
why you're even touching these toys in the first
place because somebody wouldn't let us when we
were kids that's right and we must reclaim our
childhood Absolutely. That's right. What is advice
you would give kids who enjoy toys? Well, this
is a double -edged sword, because on one hand,
you want to be like, kids, don't play with your
toys too hard. But then we also know that these
toys today aren't going to be worth anything.
This phenomenon that happened to us in our generation
isn't going to happen again. Like there's so
many of these toys now that it's just not a thing
so Just a hundred percent would be just like
Indulge that imagination man play play play play
play You know, that's what makes better humans.
I think is just be creative use your imagination
and play play play Alright folks, we're gonna

you having me on. Absolutely, absolutely. Well,
everyone else is also invited. I can't keep all
four of you in the same room, but the other three

stories. It might be a while though, because
this is episode 179. I don't know what I'm doing
for episode 180, but episode 181 to 187. So the
show may be going on hiatus in the future, folks.
Because we have to record episodes 181 to 187,
which will be the Geekcast Radio Network's Top
100 Toys countdown. So we announced this sort
of kind of so when we were deciding what countdown
we wanted to do after the wrestlers countdown
we did in 2019, we said, oh, it usually takes
us about Two years to get one of these things,
you know, get up, get everything and get all
the emails and get all the lists or whatever
else. Like, okay. In 2021, let's do transformers
and the next one let's do. Thank you. I appreciate
that. 100 hours of audio editing. Thank you very
much. Good. Glad you liked it. Glad everyone
liked it. If everyone listened to it. Uh, but
yeah, so Transformers and Toys was going to be
the next two that we were going to do. And due
to life basically throwing me a bunch of curve
balls at the end, my wife passed away. I had
to move across the country. I had to do all of
this crap and everything else. So we're like,
yeah, Toys is probably not going to be for a
while. So we are finally up to a point where
we are going to be launching the top 100 Toys
countdown coming soon. to the cast radio network
thank you so much has been a blast i always love
